My dog ate black walnut and can't walk. What should I do immediately?

Thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! Unfortunately, there is not much you can do at home other than making sure she continues to drink water. It is very important that she is evaluated by a veterinarian as soon as possible. As you noted these can be quite toxic and she is already exhibiting some of the signs of being affected by it. Your veterinarian would be able to check in with poison control to check on the most updated guidelines on how to manage this toxicity and they choose to induce vomiting as well as providing supportive care to get her through this. I think it's a sign that Rocky has worms, which is not exactly good! While the black walnut may have led to you seeing the worms in the stool it is not a dewormer and there are likely worms left in Rocky's gastrointestinal tract. It would be best to have Rocky's stool tested by your vet to determine what type of worms are present and recommend treatment. You could also try a broad spectrum dewormer that contains fenbendazole but it might not cover some worms.

I am sorry to hear about your concern for your dog! A small amount of walnut is not anything we would worry about in terms of toxicity. If your dog has a very sensitive stomach, then he may have some mild gastrointestinal upset such as diarrhea, but most dogs this will not cause any issues. Best of luck!

Walnuts are not considered toxic in dogs unless the actual shell of a walnut is ingested or the walnuts are moldy. These nuts do, however, contain a large amount of fats and oils which in some dogs can result in gastrointestinal upset such as vomiting and diarrhea, and in some cases pancreatitis. They contain gallotanins, a combination of gallic acid and tannic acid which can be harmful to dogs causing stomach upset and even kidney disease. In addition, if he ate enough of them, it could cause a GI obstruction. I would not let him eat them. I hope this helps!

Poor Bailey! Moldy food of any kind can be toxic, and often causes neurologic symptoms such as muscle tremors and incoordination - it's possible that this is what you're seeing with Bailey. Difficulty walking is always a concerning sign regardless of the underlying cause, so I would recommend taking him to the vet for an exam right away. He/she can do some diagnostic testing if needed to help determine what's wrong. If it is a mold toxicity problem, this can usually be treated successfully with IV fluids and medication to control the tremors until the toxic is flushed out of his system.
