My dog ate acorns. Are they toxic or poisonous? What should I do?

The galls can cause gastrointestinal upset if ingested in large quantities. The excess mucous is likely due to inflammation/irritation in the colon caused by the galls. Withhold food for 24 hours. Allow small amounts of water or unflavored PediaLyte. Resume feeding a bland diet in small, frequent amounts until the stool is normal then transition slowly to the regular diet. If symptoms persist, see your veterinarian.

Hi and thanks for your post on Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! I would be more concerned about the lethargy for 24 hours than the acorn she just ate. Acorns are generally not toxic to dogs unless eaten in large quantities. At most, GI upset such as diarrhea or vomiting could occur. The biggest concern with eating acorns is the possibility of the acorn causing an intestinal obstruction. I would advise you to take Buddy into his veterinarian if he is still lethargic tomorrow. There are a variety of medical conditions that can cause lethargy, so having Buddy examined and perhaps preforming some blood work on him will help get some answers. Hi, I would not worry about inducing vomiting.. as this could prove quite risky in itself in a Chihuahua. I don't think this second acorn should cause harm, I would keep an eye on Louis and make sure he does not eat any more. If you notice any vomiting, diarrhoea or lethargic have him checked over. Apricots and the pits can be toxic (cyanide poisoning) but a dog Reggie's size would need to ingest many pits at once to get close to a toxic dose of cyanide. Clinical signs of toxicity would be expected rather quickly if a toxic dose was ingested, so if no signs after a few hours of ingestion then he is likely fine. I would certainly try to prevent him from eating these though. Number one, they are toxic and, number two, the pits can cause a blockage in the intestines which would require emergency surgery to correct. It is better to be safe than sorry and prevent ingestion altogether. Hope this helps. Best wishes.

I am sorry to hear about your concern for your dog! A small amount of walnut is not anything we would worry about in terms of toxicity. If your dog has a very sensitive stomach, then he may have some mild gastrointestinal upset such as diarrhea, but most dogs this will not cause any issues. Best of luck!

Thanks for using PetCoacb! Black walnut is toxic to dogs and can lead to neurologic issues including incoordination, seizures, among other possibilities. Poinciana plants can be toxic to dogs. It can cause drooling, vomiting, diarrhea, in-coordination, liver, and kidney damage. If your are positive she only ate a small part and it has been two hours without any abnormal signs then she might be fine. The safest thing would be to have her examined by a vet for a physical examination and determine if any treatment is needed. Your vet could run lab-work to evaluate her liver and kidneys and then prescribe medications to treat, if needed.
