My dog might have eaten antifreeze 24 hours ago, is it an emergency?

Hello. If a dangerous or toxic amount of antifreeze was consumed, stage 1 symptoms can show up as early as 30 minutes & include vomiting, ataxia, weakness or depression. Signs may subside in an hour or two before progressing to a swift decline in health 6-12 hours post ingestion. During this stage, you may see panting & a significant increase in thirst & also urination. Complete shutdown of the kidneys usually occurs around 72 - 96 hours post ingestion. So if you are seeing absolutely no signs at 12 hours, you are probably OK, but if there are ever any doubts, take your dog to your vet because bloodwork will be the best way to diagnose a suspicion rather than waiting to see if anything develops ( which may now be too late to treat ). He could potentially have problems. Depending on how big he is, it doesn't take much. The first signs of antifreeze poisoning is acting like they are drunk. So watch him closely and if seen or any other abnormal behaviors, I would have your vet take a look at him immediately. There is no difference between the time it affects small or large dogs, the toxicity levels are according to the amount ingested. the symptoms abby is showing are very general, anti freeze would not be the first thing to jump to mind unless you have seen her drink it.

Only a vet can determine by examination of a cat whether treatment or not will work for a cat who has ingested antifreeze. These tablets (or eventually the antifreeze liquid) can cause extreme toxicity in dogs. An IMMEDIATE check up and treatment are necessary, this intoxication could be life threatening. Bring the tablets with you but have Teddy checked as soon as possible.
