Hello! I have great news for you! Watson is a big enough dog that the amount of Ibuprofen he ate should not cause any toxicity. I would not expect to see any problems as a result of this. He should be his normal, goofy Labrador self today. The low end of the toxic dose range is 50mg/kg, which is about 1500mg. He should be fine but if you begin to notice signs of vomiting, diarrhea, lethargy or inappetance then I would recommend having a veterinarian take a look at him so that the most appropriate diagnostic and treatment recommendations can be made. Hello. You do not say what strength the ibuprofen was, but a 50 pound dog can take about 225 mg every 12-24 hours. Toxicity may be seen if your dog ingested around 568 mg. If the tablet was 400 mg or less, Zeke will be fine, but if this was a 600mg tablet or more, you should contact your veterinarian. The active ingredient in Advil is ibuprofen. Ibuprofen is toxic as low as about 50 mg/kg. For a 30 pound dog, that is about 700 mg of ibuprofen or about 3 regular strength tablets. It does not sound like Roley could have ingested that much ibuprofen, but if they are extra strength tablets those are 600 mg, so he would only have to eat 1 to potentially have some toxic side effects. If you have any question about how much he may have ingested, I would certainly recommend contacting your veterinarian for a recommendation. Regardless of how much Roley may have ingested, if he does not seem to feel well, does not want to eat or vomits, I would recommend having your vet see him right away. While this would be within the therapeutic index and it is supposed to be safe, this medication is not commonly used for pain control in dogs as it is not well-studied. Hi there. We can see serious GI side effects, including stomach ulcers and internal bleeding, at ibuprofen doses over 50 mg/kg. If Dubs is 35 pounds and may have ingested 1200 mg of ibuprofen, this would be about 75 mg/kg - so yes, he would be at risk of developing some serious problems. I would recommend taking him to the vet today for an exam. The veterinarian may recommend checking some lab work to see if there is any evidence of bleeding in his stomach, and will probably prescribe medication to help protect his stomach lining for the next few days until the ibuprofen is out of his system.
