How do I prepare my sick small dog's vet-prescribed medicine?

Thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! My fist recommendation would be to call the vet to double check because amoxicillin has a very broad dose range. This is a little bit higher dose than I usually use but may be exactly what your vet wanted. (I would do about 2 cc’s twice daily for most patients her size.) There is not much harm in higher dosing, other than an increased risk of nausea, vomiting, and diarrhea so don’t worry about poisoning Lupita. Twice daily dosing for the amoxicillin is definitely correct as this drug needs to be in the bloodstream for a sustained time to work properly. The prednisone dose is fine. Hello. Medications can be hidden in meat, cheese, pill pockets, even marshmallows, but I strongly do not recommend giving any medication to an unknown dog in an unknown condition & without knowing how that antibiotic may adversely affect the dog. It is best to try & capture the dog safely & transport him to a veterinary facility for proper diagnosis & treatment. Hi and thanks for posting on Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! Cutting a pill into 1/5 has got to be very tricky even with a pill cutter! I would recommend consulting with Meg's veterinarian about getting her on a different medication that is easy to dose and doesn't require splitting the pill into small pieces. There are a variety of pain medications out there and available for arthritis that are much better and safer to use than paracetamol such as Rimadyl, Galliprant, or Previcox. I would ask your veterinarian if Meg could be transitioned over to a better alternative. I hope this helps!

Unfortunately, by law it is illegal for the experts at Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach to give the dose information for any drug, including OTC drugs, without seeing the animal in person first. That's because doing so requires a veterinary client patient relationship which cannot be achieved via an internet forum. In addition, the experts cannot say for certain if a specific drug is safe for your dog. You need to ask Oscar's vet if you can give him this, and the vet will give you the dose. I hope this helps!
