Can I tell if my dog's armpit lump is a lipoma or enlarged lymph node?

Pet's info: Dog | Doberman Pinscher | Female | spayed | 6 years and 8 months old | 77 lbs

How to differentiate between a lipoma and a enlarged lymph node in the armpit area? Can they be differentiated by touch? Just found a lump in my dog’s right armpit where the axillary nodes are, it’s about the size of half an egg, and feels just like her other lipomas, bouncy, soft and moveable. But could this be an enlarged lymph node?

An enlarged lymph node will feel firmer than a lipoma. It won't be as "smooth" and uniform. It may have some texture (think 'chewed bubble gum').
Unfortunately, there is no definitive way to find out except by aspirating it or having a biopsy performed by your veterinarian.

I can say that is unlikely to be an lymph node but unfortunately this have to be confirmed by a clinical examination at your local vets.
Your vet will examine it and possibly perform with an FNA (fine needle aspiration) or a biopsy.
Differentials would include skin cyst, infections or benign or malignant type of tumors (lipomas included).

This can be a benign lump, or it could be a lipoma or cyst. Any suspicious lumps should be examined by the vet. The vet can perform a test called a fine needle aspirate on it. To do this, the vet sticks a small needle into the lump to get a sample of its cells, and examines the cells on a slide under a microscope. It's usually painless to the animal, and relatively quick to perform. Once the cause of the lump is diagnosed, the vet can discuss treatment options if needed. This is most of the time differentiated with a test called a fine needle aspirate which is easy, cheap and pain-free. Sometimes, a biopsy is required for a diagnosis. Have Panzer evaluated by your veterinarian to have this test performed to try to sort out what the diagnosis is so that the best course of action can be determined. Keeping my fingers crossed that it is something benign!

This is often differentiated by a test called a fine needle aspirate (FNA) which is a pain free, inexpensive and easy procedure which in most cases will help reach a diagnosis.
