My dog's arm growth is scratched and painful with pus. What to do?

Hi you can clean the area gently with some cotton water and some saline or lukewarm boiled water. I think the lump could be a benign skin tumour that has now released ome keratin and cause inflammation. However, you should get a more precise diagnosis where the fine needle aspirate results are back. Make an appointment with your vet tomorrow, unless worried in the meantime. Hope this helps !

I see what you mean about the growth. I would be concerned about it because it's clearly bothering Apple Crisp, and the fact that she is an older dog. Any growth in an older dog has a chance of being malignant. Any suspicious lumps should be examined by the vet. The vet can perform a test called a fine needle aspirate on it. To do this, the vet sticks a small needle into the lump to get a sample of its cells, and examines the cells on a slide under a microscope. It's usually painless to the animal, and relatively quick to perform. Once the cause of the lump is diagnosed, the vet can discuss treatment options if needed. I recommend making an appointment to have your dog seen by your veterinarian to help determine the cause of the bump you’ve noticed and to make sure it is treated appropriately. The vet will likely want to look at a sample from the area under the microscope to determine what is causing the bump and to provide treatment. . In the meantime, if he is licking the area, I recommend putting an e-collar/cone on him to help prevent licking and reduce the risk of infection.

This could be just an infection though I am suspicious that there is a growth underneath causing this. There is no way of knowing what it is just based on its appearance. This is often differentiated by a test called a fine needle aspirate (FNA) which is a pain free, inexpensive and easy procedure which in most cases will help reach a diagnosis. Sometimes a biopsy is needed for a definitive diagnosis. This is severe and no home remedies are expected to improve this. I'm not sure what it is exactly as i can't see where on your dog's body it is, it looks like an ulcerated infected wound, it will definitely require antibiotic treatment, you will need to take Artemis to the vet for that.

Hi Maisie! If there is some pus coming out of it, this lump could be an abscess on Mika. It could also be due to a bacterial skin infection. I would have Mika seen by a vet tomorrow or first thing on Monday to have the lump examined and diagnosed. Once a diagnosis is found, the vet can discuss treatment with you.

Ouch! With any new growth like this, it's best to have your vet take a look in person, as it isn't really possible to determine what is causing the growth just from a photo. Your vet can take a sample of the growth as needed with a fine-needle aspirate, or biopsy, to check what cell type is present and if the spot needs further attention. Other causes can be calluses from rubbing, scabbing from a wound or infection under the skin, or other issues. Until you can get to the vet, it's best to keep the area clean and dry and prevent Ginger from licking or chewing at it with an Elizabethan (cone) collar or sock over the spot. Monitoring it for any additional changes such as size, oozing debris, pain, etc, is also a good idea as these observations can help your vet narrow down the cause and best treatment plan.
