What is this brown, crusty, pus-filled lump on my puppy's armpit?

Thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! This could be a benign or malignant growth. Given his young age, this could just be a small abscess or site of infection. This is often differentiated by a test called a fine needle aspirate (FNA) which is a pain free, inexpensive and easy procedure which in most cases will help reach a diagnosis. Sometimes a biopsy is needed for a definitive diagnosis. I recommend that you have him evaluated by your veterinarian for further assessment and treatment. I am really hoping for something benign. Hello, thank you for your question about Mia. It is possible that Mia has a skin infection or infected hair gland that is leading to the bump and the pus-like discharge you are seeing. If the discharge is more clear in nature it is possible that Mia has a sebaceous cyst or fluid accumulation associated with one of the sweat glands in the skin. If Mia is bothered by this lesion or if the discharge truly is pus, I would recommend having her evaluated by your veterinarian so that they can examine the lesion and potentially collect a sample of the discharge for evaluation. They can then discuss the need for further treatments such as antibiotics. I would wash the area with water and mild soap and apply a triple antibiotic ointment twice daily. The area does look a bit swollen so watch it closely. I would recommend monitoring it for now and if it worsens, becomes much larger or does not go away, I would recommend having the veterinarian recheck Maisy so that the most appropriate diagnostic and treatment recommendations can be made. You can apply a spray such as Malacetic conditioning spray to the area, which can be found online and do this twice daily until it resolves. I hope this helps! Some young dogs will sometimes develop a skin infection or pyoderma. But a foreign object or a mass are possibilities as well. However, if it is not resolving then an appointment with your veterinarian would be recommended. Best of luck and thank you for using Pet Coach.

The lesion on Luna's face may be a bacterial infection, a fungal infection known as ringworm or due to a skin mite known as Demodex. Luna will need to see a veterinarian for an exam and a skin scrape to determine the correct diagnosis. Treatment is very different for each condition and they can all look similar, so testing needs to be done to be sure.

It's difficult to tell exactly what's going on here without seeing the lesion and being able to do some testing, but I am suspicious of a skin infections. These infections can be due to fungi, bacteria, parasites, or all of the above. There is often a primary problem that causes the itch, so if Maggie has been itching for a while, then it's best to get the source of the itch discovered by a vet. I'll give you a few tips for dealing with a skin infection, but if the lesion gets worse, or is not getting any better within a week of treatment, then I'd recommend you have a vet evaluate Maggie. I recommend doing the following every day until the skin appears normal again: 1) Clip the hair around the area and expose all of the lesions. 2) Wash the area with warm water and a medicated shampoo (can get this at the pet store) once a day. Use a cloth and gently wipe away the scabs. Do not scrub, because it will irritate the skin more. It's OK if all of the scabs do not come off in each washing. 3) Make sure the area is completely dry after washing. I hope that helps and all is well with Maggie.
