Can a new antler cause my dog to have loose stool with mucus?

Diet change, especially abruptly, can certainly cause mucousy stool and even loose stool. I would recommend monitoring iggy for the next few days and if this continues without resolving on its own, its best to get him seen by your vet. You can also opt to just transition him back to the Royal Canin hydrolyzed diet since that seemed to agree with him GI tract. You can also start a probiotic such as Fortiflora (available on Chewy.com) to see if this will help get the bacterial flora in his gut back to normal. Loose stools can be observed with conditions such as colitis, gastroenteritis, dietary indiscretion, intestinal parasites, among many other possibilities. This is not likely at all to be due to you taking the temperature. It is possible that this is just from eating the bone which could have caused some mild gastrointestinal upset. If no improvement is noted in the next 48 hours or he develops diarrhea, I recommend that you have Cooper evaluated by your veterinarian for further assessment and treatment. There is always some mucus in stool. It aids in defecation. An increased amount can be due to some inflammation in the intestine. If she had intestinal parasites and was recently treated, this could be the cause. If she is behaving normally, you can monitor her at home. Consider a bland diet in small, frequent amounts until the stool is normal then transition slowly to her regular diet. Symptoms that should be addressed by your veterinarian include lethargy, vomiting, diarrhea, loss of appetite or abdominal pain.

As for the loose stool, I would consider switching to a different food with a different meat protein such as salmon or venison. I recommend giving a probiotics as well such as Purina fortiflora. In my experience, it would be fairly unusual for a glucosamine supplement to cause loose stools and gas - but I have had a few patients over the years who experienced similar problems after starting glucosamine, so it's certainly possible. If you want to find out for sure, you could simply stop giving the glucosamine for the next several days to see if the problem resolves. If not, or if the problem gets worse in the meantime, it would be best to see your vet for an exam to find out what else might be causing her GI issues.

Hi there. Diarrhea can be caused by a multitude of things. Increased mucous makes me suspicious of parasites first. I would recommend taking your pup in to have a fecal. Based on the findings of this, you can choose how best to proceed after this easy step is ruled out. It may also be that Pandora has an upset stomach due to something she's eaten and has thrown her digestive system off. Think about if you have changed her food or given her anything she does not normally get. Hope this helps.

It is possible that Sophie has a dietary indiscretion to the current diet or treats you are feeding her. I would recommend trying a different meat protein and see if this helps or try a sensitive stomach formula to see if this helps as well. Sometimes switching to a completely different brand helps as well. If the problem persists, I would recommend having a veterinarian test her stool for fecal parasites just to be on the safe side.
