Dog struggling with mucus in stool after new wet food. Vet needed?

If you did a quick switch from the old to the new food this could definitely cause diarrhea, especially if no other symptoms are present. You can try going back to the old food until the stools form again and doing a slow transition to the new diet over a week. If the diarrhea occurs again this is likely not a good food for Olaf. Some animals with diet related diarrhea may benefit from a probiotic. A few commonly used in pets are fortiflora and proviable. Certainly if the symptoms do not get better, get worse, or are accompanied by blood in the stool and/or a decreased appetite/vomiting/lethargy a visit to your veterinarian is recommended. This does sound like a colitis, which can be due to an abrupt diet change, but it's also possibly due to something else like and infection or toxin ingestion. I think it would be worthwhile to switch to the Pedigree and see if that helps. If that helps, but you want to switch him to the Iams in the future, then you can try doing it again slowly. Feed small portions (1/2 cup or less) three times a day. You can also add probiotics to the food (can get this at the pet store), which has demonstrated some efficacy for improving diarrhea. Ensure fresh, clean water is always available. Diarrhea is a common problem with puppies and is usually self-limiting (will go away on its own). It may not be serious right now, but it's always possible that it could be the start of something serious. If Gizmo has any of the following, then he should see a vet: 1) Blood in diarrhea 2) Very watery diarrhea 3) Starts acting very depressed 4) Stops eating or drinking for longer than 24 hours. 5) Diarrhea lasts longer than three days. Yes, it could be from the antler. I suggest you take it away from him so he can't chew it anymore. The loose stool should resolve on it's own with no treatment but if you would like to start him on a probiotic you can do that. One made for dogs, not people. You can buy them at any large petstore like Petco. The mucus is not that concerning at this stage. If the loose stool and/or mucus lasts longer than 3 days then he should see a vet.

Mucus generally means inflammation and this can come from parasites (like worms and giardia), a diet not right for Lucy's body or bacterial over growth. A bland diet for 3 days can help and then a slow, gradual introduction to the normal food can be done. A bland diet can consist of 25% boiled white meat chicken and 75% boiled white rice. This should all be plain. A probiotic may also be beneficial. I recommend Purina FortiFlora if you can find it. A good diet in general is Royal Canin. It is low residue and highly digestible. Lastly, if the mucus continues after 2 weeks, have Lucy checked for worms and giardia by her veterinarian. I hope this helps.

Yes this could be definitively due to diet. As a first approach, I would suggest to withhold food for the next 8-12 hours and then start feeding with a bland diet based on boiled chicken and rice in small portion every 6 hours for the following 48hours. Then gradually reintroduce the normal diet over 5 days. I would definitively recommend a veterinary check up if the signs persist or you notice lethargy or inappetence. That is good that you actually took photos! It’s so much easier to see the stool than to get a verbal description. Loose stool can be a sign of many conditions and if you are seeing frequent signs of it, it could indicate parasites, inflammatory bowel disease, bacterial over growth or just dietary intolerance. At 2 years old, Harley is not likely to have other conditions that can cause frequent soft stools like liver or kidney disease, or lymphoma but it is possible. Take a look around her environment and see if there’s anything she could’ve gotten into in the house or the yard. Dogs will often eat things that upset their stomach’s like dead earthworms or garbage. I recommend to call your veterinarian and let them know what is happening. They may ask to see Harley earlier or they may post pone her vaccines. If Harley is acting completely normal, is not having any vomiting and has a normal appetite, this could just be a passing thing. Go ahead and switch her to a bland diet of boiled white meat chicken (25%) and boiled plain white rice (75%). It will measure out cup for cup of just like her dog food. Feed her this for 24 hours and if things are looking better wean her back to her regular food over a couple days. if Harley is showing signs of illness, then I would recommend to have her seen today if possible. I would recommend GG have a check up. Mucus in the stool is a sign of colitis or GI upset so it would be a good idea to get her evaluated before she starts feeling worse. If anything has changed in the formulation of her raw diet she may have gastritis or bacterial overgrowth. Something is abnormal for her to have mucus in the stool for a couple of weeks. She may have parasites, or a bacterial overgrowth. There are many possibilities but I would be concerned. Good luck to GG.
