My dog on antibiotics has a leg wound, bloody stool, and bad smell. What's causing it?

This appears to be an infected wound. It looks like it has been caused by some sort of penetrating object. The antibiotics should start to kick in and sort the infection. You can clean the outside with warm water that has been boiled. If it is not improving go back to the vet in case there is a foreign body inside it.

Poor Baxter! This looks like quite a deep wound, and it appears to be infected. I can't say from looking what might have caused it - it's possible that this could be a skin growth of some kind that has become infected and burst open, or he may have injured himself somehow. Regardless, this is definitely something that needs to be seen by a veterinarian - using topical antibiotic ointment will not be enough to treat it effectively. Your veterinarian can prescribe oral antibiotics and anti-inflammatory meds, and may also recommend taking a biopsy of the affected area or other testing if needed to help determine what's going on.

It sounds like Smokey may have ruptured an anal gland that became impacted and/or infected. This condition is very painful. I recommend getting him seen by your vet as soon as possible for wound care and probably a course of antibiotics to help him heal faster. They can teach you how to express his anal glands or you can take him in periodically for them to do it for you as he needs it.

Thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! Given that she has evidence of wound dehiscence, she should be re-evaluated by a veterinarian for further assessment. This wound is likely going to need to be addressed locally with wound cleaning, debridement and most likely by replacing those stitches that came out. At the same time, she is likely to need antibiotics as well. In the meantime, I recommend that you limit her activity as much as possible and use an e-collar to prevent further self-trauma. At the same time, they may be able to check her for the bloody stool which could be secondary to medications if she is on something like a pain killer or antibiotic after her surgery. Good luck! It sounds like her cut may have become infected and is causing more problems. Try to keep the wound as clean as possible for now and plan on taking her to the vet as soon as you can. Unfortunately I'd guess that this is an implant failure, and the symptoms may not resolve until the screw is removed. I'd recommend rechecking with your vet to see what they would recommend next. It's possible that a different surgical procedure will need to be performed, or your vet might want to try getting a culture of the wound and a longer course of antibiotics.

Anesthesia can cause these symptoms along with the stress of the stay but that antibiotic can be a factor also. If he is eating and drinking fine with only a small amount of blood at the end of the BM then you can monitor for anything further. If it is diarrhea with blood through out then I would get him seen. You can always try boiled chicken and rice as this is bland and easy to digest. You may need to add canine probiotics while in antibiotics. You may want to talk to your vet about a different one that is easier on the stomach
