Why does my dog's deep wound still smell bad after antibiotics?

This is a large and deep wound that should have been surgically closed. It is going to take a very long time to close on its own without surgery. You will have to keep it clean and prevent him from licking or rubbing it. Amoxicillin is not a very good antibiotic for preventing infection in a wound such as this. If it begins to have drainage, odor, etc. I would highly recommend getting a different and more appropriate antibiotic. I’m not sure how old the wound is, but it does look like you have kept it relatively clean. It would be a good idea to get the hair away from the wound edges if possible. The bad smell could be coming from Tesha's anal sacs. They may be impacted. But it could be from the hole in her leg, but she's on antibiotics to prevent infection. Keep a close eye on her, and if you still smell a bad smell in the morning have her seen by a vet. Best of luck.

I can't say from looking what might have caused it - it's possible that this could be a skin growth of some kind that has become infected and burst open, or he may have injured himself somehow. Regardless, this is definitely something that needs to be seen by a veterinarian - using topical antibiotic ointment will not be enough to treat it effectively. Your veterinarian can prescribe oral antibiotics and anti-inflammatory meds, and may also recommend taking a biopsy of the affected area or other testing if needed to help determine what's going on.

This wound may take weeks to heal but oral antibiotics will not be necessary the entire time. The smell will get better with time. After a burn, the blood supply to the skin can be damaged and cause necrosis over the next few days. This is the old skin going away and new skin forming, so there can be an odor from this. Once all the old, burned skin is gone and the infection stays under control, the smell goes away and everything gets better overnight. If it is getting worse, then you may need to talk to your vet to see if surgical debridement or a new antibiotic may be needed

You should take Murphy to your local vets for an appointment as this wound should be clipped, cleaned, flushed and potentially stitched up under sedation. It would take a very long time to heal if the wound was treated with antibiotics only. The symptoms of infection usually develops in the first 24hrs and include fever, discharge, swelling and pain around the wound.

In general, infected wounds are discharging, smelly, hot and painful to touch. Many dogs with infected wounds are generally unwell. A visit at your local vets is recommended to assess the wound and decide on the best treatment for Oreo. I suspect he may be prescribed an antibiotic cream or ointment to speed up healing.
