Why does my dog release anal glands and act aggressive toward dogs?

Bruno is likely expressing his anal glands. Normally, they are expressed during the act of defecation and are part of scenting or marking. Dogs will also express, or release, the contents of the glands during times of stress or excitement. You can try gradually acclimating him to your friend's dog and other pets. Do this on "neutral" ground and under close supervision. Begin with short periods and gradually increase as Bruno accepts the other dog. Praise and reward him as he progresses. Immediately correct any aggressive behaviors. A pheromone product such as the Adaptil collar or DAP plug in diffuser may decrease his anxiety or aggression.

There is a reason German Shepherds have been chosen as guard and military dogs for ages. They do tend to be protective of their owners and some do not do as well near other dogs. Serious training (and occasionally behavior modification medication) is needed to overcome this in some animals. Neutering also helps reduce protective or aggressive urges in male dogs. When a puppy shows aggression, I immediately advise neutering him to remove the male hormone-driven behaviors. I would advise taking him to your veterinarian for their opinion also. He may have some medical reason for his sudden onset of aggression. Your vet can gather a history, perform an exam and then offer a diagnostic/treatment plan based on their findings. Possible tests include fecal/blood/urine tests and x-rays to look for underlying medical problems that could cause aggression. If a behavioral problem is suspected, then neutering, behavior modification, and drug therapy can be tried. I wish you good luck with Bruno

Canine aggression is a complex behavior as it can stem from dominance, possessiveness, fear, anxiety, resource guarding or a combination. Most people are not familiar with reading canine body language and training. Because of this, I recommend to work with a professional trainer. Researching on your own will also be helpful. Familiarizing yourself with canine body language and dog training can help you to recognize what your pet is trying to say. You can find many books written on the topic and there is a trainer named Victoria Stilwell who I think is particularly helpful. Certainly male dogs who are not neutered are more prone to fighting and aggression. Neutering him may help but it will not likely solve all the problems. Best of luck.

As an unneutered male, he is starting to feel the effects of male hormones, which can manifest in aggressive behavior. You can try to help him acclimate to other dogs by introducing them in a controlled manner, with both dogs on leashes and through a fence initially until you can see how they will react to one another. Some barking and growling is normal but by reassuring them both without getting too excited can help. The more excited you become, the more he will, and he may feel he needs to be protective of you. Additionally, work with your dog away from other dogs. Play, take him for runs (Huskies are born runners and are very high energy, as I'm sure you are aware.), get him involved in obedience, play fetch, get him involved in dog agility, flyball, anything and everything to keep him well exercised and tied. This will help him be calm and well behaved the rest of the time since a tired dog is a happy dog. And, unless you plan to breed him because he is an exemplary example of his breed, consider getting him neutered. This will remove the primary source of the hormones most responsible for aggression and will also help with other behavioral issues in the future, as well as reducing the urge to roam in search of females. This will keep him safer and less likely to be hit by a car if he does get out on his own.

That's a frustration habit for Bruno to pick up. There are many many possibilities here. Bruno could be experiencing anxiety, territorial aggression, physical pain, resource guarding, or another behavior problem. I would recommend a behavior consolation with your veterinarian first so they can determine if this is a medical issue or primary behavior problem and get you connected with the best person to help Bruno feel better. In the meantime, don't punish Bruno for barking - instead try to distract him with treats. Ultimately, i expect you're going to need some hands on professional help. Good luck!
