Can a dog really be left home alone for 5 days with an indoor potty?

It is unlikely that she would die. However, she would be extremely stressed. Dogs are so bonded to their people, and it is very upsetting to them when they are used to human interaction and then left alone for days on end; Chihuahuas certainly tend to be a breed that is usually VERY bonded to “their people.” The stress may lead to vomiting and diarrhea, lack of appetite, which could potentially lead to life threatening dehydration (though water may be available she may be unable to keep it down, and massive fluid losses through diarrhea often require IV fluids). A highly stressful, unsupervised event may also result in risky behavior such as: *jumping excessively at windows and doors, which could be a strangulation hazard if there are curtain or blind cords around *chewing on electric cords * jumping off of high furniture which could result in a fracture or other injury in a small breed dog. If you can have a friend or family member come in and check on Taco even just once a day, that would be highly preferable. I have had several clients with dogs that had this same problem . What worked for them really well is a product called Fresh Patch, which is essentially just a square of grass that sits in a cardboard box. I find that this product works very well for getting dogs to go to the bathroom on grass and outdoors for training. I would see if there is something similar in India or if they ship to India. If not, then I would recommend installing a dog door at the house or something and see if that helps.

Thanks for using coach! Lady will need access to go potty throughout the day. If she has access to potty pads that will be sufficient. She also needs lots of freshwater. Because of her size she really needs to be fed 3 to 4 times a day so her blood sugar doesn’t get too low. I would see if you can find someone to come and feed her several times a day. Also, that many hours alone she will probably be pretty bored and may end up being distructive to her surroundings. This means she may eat her poop, chew up her blankets and pee pads, or cry for hours. I would set up a dog walker or find a friend that can help pet sit to break up her alone time. I think a reasonable goal is 5-6 hours if you do not need to leave her for a full work day. This would allow you to be out of the house for a good amount of time knowing that she is comfortable. As far as her dog run, water is a necessity. Anything else left in the run should be tested before you leave her for hours. Some puppies are good with toys, beds or blankets, while others will destroy and eat these items. If she eats one of these items, it would become a surgery to remove it. 12 hours is too long for most dogs who can’t get out to use the potty. 8-10 is generally the maximum time they can comfortably hold their urine. If she has a place to use the bathroom, she will be fine. Dogs don’t really have a sense of time. I recommend to have a friend come over to walk her mid day. You can also use the walking services offered by Rover.com. This will give Kiki a break and some exercise. When you are home, make sure she gets a good walk every day and a play session. As long as you are providing the puppy with a place to sleep, plenty of water and toys you should be ok to leave him for 3-5 hours with no problem. You can even look into the PetCube to interact with him remotely when you are not physically there.
