How to get my dog to pee indoors when I'm not home for hours?

Hi there and thank you for using PetCoach to address your concern. Bo is still quite young and him urinating inside is something that he should eventually grow out with training. Positive reinforcement with treats whenever he urinates outside and defecates outside will help reinforce him going outside. I've had great success with recommending Fresh Patch. This is a patch of grass in a cardboard box with absorbent material underneath the grass and you place this in the house. Bo will use this real grass to go to the bathroom short term. I would recommend starting by placing the grass in the area where he has been urinating and then gradually moving the patch of grass closer and closer to the door to the outside until eventually the grass patch is outside of the house and he is using it there. More frequent walks outside may also help stop this inappropriate urination and then rewarding him when he does urinate outside every time will help reinforce him going outside. I've had so many clients have success stories with potty training their puppy because of this product. It is basically a patch of grass that you order online that comes in a cardboard box that auto-ships to you to replace the used one. I would continue to carry him out onto the grass and keep him on a leash on the grass until he goes and then reward him with a treat. You might also consider purchasing a product called Fresh Patch, which is a patch of sod in a cardboard container that you place on the ground and is used as an area where Jasper can go to the bathroom in the house or on the patio. Unfortunately you cannot force a dog to pee inside. Most dogs that are very well house trained will not pee inside unless it is has been more than 24 hours. Just leave her alone and keep her in one room in the house, very dark, and if you can, play some soft music loudly to drown out the outside sounds. This may help make her calmer. Do not worry about the urination. She will pee when her bladder gets full enough.

Put Maggie on a leash and take her outside to her designated spot. Do not walk around. Just stand there and repeat "go outside" or a similar phrase. As soon as she starts to go, repeat "go outside" and praise "good dog!" as she goes. When she is finished, bring her directly back inside. If she does not go after a reasonable amount of time, bring her in but do not remove the leash. Attach it to your belt loop and keep her with you. Don’t let her out of your sight! When you see her start to circle or sniff, take her right outdoors again and repeat the process. If she does mess in the house, do not scold her unless you actually catch her in the act. In that case, say "NO!" and take her right outside. Tell her to "go outside" and praise as she finishes. Keep her in a crate at night, or for short periods when you are not at home.
