I am sorry to hear about your Akita. There are many different skin growths that can occur in dogs. Some are more benign, such as sebaceous adenomas, where others are malignant and can spread/behave aggressively such as mast cell tumors. Unfortunately without examining the growth we cannot tell you what type of mass you have. The safest course of action would be to set up an appointment with your vet. They can examine the area and may recommend what is called a fine needle aspirate, where a small needle is inserted into the growth to collect cells to aid in identification of the mass which can help determine the appropriate course of action (i.e. just monitor for changes versus surgical removal).

I am sorry to hear about Toki! This could be something like a small tumor of the skin which has been scratched and traumatized. It could also be a small wound that has become infected or an insect bite that was infected. Without touching and examining the area we cannot determine exactly what it is, so I would recommend bringing Toki in for the vet to examine it. If it is an infection they will prescribe antibiotics, if it is a tumor then surgical removal may be needed if they are concerned it could be a more aggressive form, or monitoring if they feel it is benign.

Her veterinarian will likely perform a procedure known as a fine needle aspirate to determine the type of mass. My dog keeps scratching a lump behind his ear. What could it be?

Thank you for posting the picture of the lump on Leo. There are several possibilities of what it could be but I suspect it is one of 3 things. A sebaceous adenoma which is a benign growth of the oil gland, a cyst, or possibly a tumor called a mast cell tumor. A veterinarian will take a needle aspirate and look at the cells under the microscope to assess if this is something that is concerning or not. This could just be a benign growth but without seeing Mac in person, I can't say for certain. Any suspicious lumps should be examined by the vet. The vet can perform a test called a fine needle aspirate on it. To do this, the vet sticks a small needle into the lump to get a sample of its cells, and examines the cells on a slide under a microscope. It's usually painless to the animal, and relatively quick to perform. Once the cause of the lump is diagnosed, the vet can discuss treatment options if needed. My dog has a raised, scabby ear bump but acts normal. Is it serious?

This looks like a mass, which is a collection of cells. A mass can be benign (inflammation, cyst, etc) or malignant (skin tumor). The only way to know what this mass is would be by having your vet sample it. Typically we start with a needle aspiration for cytology. That does look to be a mass. A mass is a collection of cells and can be benign (inflammation, cyst, some tumors) or a malignant tumor. Given the age of your dog this may be a histiocytoma, but as many skin tumors can look alike the best plan to confirm this is for your vet to perform a needle aspirate for cytology. If this just showed up, I would recommend having a veterinarian take a look at this. It may be a type of tumor that needs to be removed called a mast cell tumor.
