My dog is acting strange, shaking, and burping. Should I call a vet?

Poor guy. I would be cautious here and take him in to your local vet right away if this has been going on for more than 30 mins-1 hr or if he is lethargic. A number of things could be going on here such as a toxin ingestion, severe stomach upset episodes or an underlying disease such as Addison's disease. Check his gum color immediately and if you notice pale gums then he should be seen right away as well. I do hope that this is just a stomach upset and that he starts to improve over the next hour. If he does seem to calm down, then you should definitely fast him for the next 12 hrs (water only), then you should feed him a bland diet of boiled plain chicken or lean ground turkey and white rice for the next few days to help settle his stomach. Poor Niko! I am not sure if he is still having problems but it sounds like he could be experiencing some pain. He could have back/neck pain or possibly dental disease and pain while eating. Have your vet examine him to determine the cause and treat. He may need an anti-inflammatory and pain medications to help. Hope he is feeling better soon!

If there is any abdominal enlargement or pain he needs to be assessed by a vet as an emergency - non-productive/white foamy vomit is very concerning in a dog which is eating as it can indicate an obstruction. A pancreatitis blood test may also be required depending on the results of the physical exam

Small breed dogs don't get bloat. Bloat is a large breed deep chested dog disease, so you have nothing to worry about there. Also symptoms of bloat include vomiting (food and water), severe pain and agony in a lateral position. Niko likely has some indigestion and has from eating too much food in such a short amount time. Allow his stomach to settle by skipping his next meal and then you can feed him an easily digestible meal such as plain boiled chicken and rice or cottage cheese for a few days until he gets back to his normal self. This can be associated with a number of conditions from pancreatitis to foreign bodies and requires veterinary attention as soon as possible. Hi, thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! Poor Nikko! Dogs can share some human viral illnesses but I am not sure if what you are describing fits. It sounds as though Nikko is painful. I would have him seen today by your Vet. He could have neck or back pain or Lyme disease. Orthopedic pain and a fever is classic for tick borne diseases. As long as she is acting ok you could monitor her for additional signs. If she starts retching, seems uncomfortable, starts drooling, is painful, or the distension persists then she should be examined by a vet. Your vet can take an X-ray to evaluate her abdomen and determine the exact cause of her problem.
