My dog is shaking, tired, fearful, and hiding. Could he be in pain?

Hi, thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! Poor Nikko! Dogs can share some human viral illnesses but I am not sure if what you are describing fits. It sounds as though Nikko is painful. I would have him seen today by your Vet. He could have neck or back pain or Lyme disease. Orthopedic pain and a fever is classic for tick borne diseases. I can certainly understand being concerned about Niko! If he did have bloat, you would see unproductive vomiting, abdominal pain, an enlarged belly, restless, and pacing. It could be that he is feeling unwell from stomach upset causing the burping and strange behavior. The shaking could be caused by pain. I would monitor Niko for now. If he does start to show signs of bloat, or starts vomiting and becomes very lethargic, I would have him seen by an emergency vet. Otherwise, have him seen by a vet in the morning should these same symptoms continue.

Shaking can be a sign of anxiety, but it can also be a sign of pain. Back/neck and abdominal pain in particular can be difficult to localize and sometimes reluctance to move and shaking are the only signs. Shaking can also be a sign of a fever. If you think Peanut might be painful or if he continues to show no interest in his regular food I'd recommend seeing your vet for an exam. They can look for a source of pain and evaluate his temperature.

Nik is experiencing very general symptoms of disease, these symptoms could fit almost any internal condition, maybe he is suffering from nausea due to a gastrointestinal disease and maybe he is in pain, from the symptoms described it's very hard to know. i would recommend taking him to the vet as soon as possible in order to get him checked, if he doesn't show any other obvious symptoms during the examination, a blood test and possibly an ultrasound will be needed in order to try and find out what is wrong with Nik .

There are a wide variety of health problems that can cause shaking/crying and decreased appetite. Pain or discomfort from a number of health problems could cause the shaking and crying. Decreased appetite may be due to pain or can be due to nausea from any number of health issues such as orthopedic conditions, organ dysfunction, infections, autoimmune diseases, toxins, or certain types of cancers. Due to the variety of possibilities in this case, I would highly recommend Fido be seen by his veterinarian right away for an evaluation. He may need blood work and/or x-rays to help determine a cause so he can get appropriately treated. I hope this helps and best of luck to you and Fido!

Hmm. That is odd. With no other symptoms besides the shaking, it is hard to say for sure. Shaking can be a sign of pain, neurological or an acid/base imbalance. I would continue monitor him for the next 12 hrs to see if this behavior continues. If it does then the next best step is to get some baseline bloodwork to look for underlying issues. You can also feel around to see if Snickers is painful in any particular area. That can help the vet focus on that one area to look for underlying causes. At this age most dogs also have arthritis, so it is a good idea to get Snickers on a daily joint supplement regardless. My top recommendations here for over the counter products is Dasuquin or Cosequin, and for veterinary prescription products it is Rejuvenate. Aw poor Byron! It sounds like he is pretty sick. Some of what your describing may be related to back or neck pain or abdominal pain caused by gastrointestinal disease. Without an examination it's difficult to say what is causing the problem. I recommend taking Byron to see a veterinarian right away so he can be examined and the cause of his illness can be determined. He may need pain medication and because there are no safe over the counter pain medications for dogs you will need a prescription pain medication from a veterinarian.
