Dog abscess drained: site hard, pus from tubes. Is this normal?

Pet's info: Dog | Boston Terrier | Female | 20 lbs

My dog got an abscess drained 2 days ago and has drain tubes but now the sight of the abscess is hard and I think pus is coming out of the tubes. Is this normal?

I don't think that it being hard is normal for an abscess, but this appears to be a very large abscess. You should call your vet to discuss this new finding, as they may have some insight depending on the suspected cause and the exam findings. The purpose of the drains is to allow the fluid to be released as the wound is healing. If they weren't there and the hole your vet created closed up, then all of that fluid would be trapped under the skin and it would re-abscess.

It is hard to say from the photos, but it might not be a bad idea to have Maddie rechecked. She should be on appropriate antibiotics and pain medication during this time. I worry that it looks like she still has an ongoing infection.

Hi and thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! Sorry to hear that Layla is having this problem. Not sure if a drain(s) were placed but it sounds like the vet felt like they weren't needed. If the abscess is swelled back up I can only assume that it needs to be drained, explored, and drain(s) placed to enhance drainage and allow healing to take place. It's possible there is a foreign body in there causing problems. I would advise going back to your vet or going to another vet in the area if you wanted to get a second opinion. I wish you good luck.

My dog's wound is bleeding a lot after abscess drainage. Is it normal?

It looks like a penrose drain was placed these drains usually stay in 3-5 days. It is normal to see a blood discharge or seriosangenous fluid like it see in the picture. I would monitor the wound for drainage. It should be decreasing each day. If at anytime the patient is lethargic or not eating/drinking I would take him back to the vet to have it checked.

Dog with abscess drains: Is heavy drainage and whimpering normal?

It certainly looks uncomfortable. Poor Cooper! The amount of drainage depends on how big the abscess was originally. You can apply a warm compress to encourage drainage and to provide relief. Ask your veterinarian if Cooper could benefit from some pain management for more relief.

My cat had abscess surgery. Why isn't her drainage tube draining?

The tube is a drainage and seems well placed. If there is no fluid coming out from the wound the tube can be removed in the next 48hours. The wound seems, externally, healing quite well so if Luna is ok in herself (eating well, no lethargy, no vomiting or diarrhoea and no excessive discomfort), everything seems going well postoperatively. The outcome will be good, and I do not think you need to seek advice from another vet. I would discuss Penrose drainage removal with your vet and continue with medications prescribed (antibiotics are needed). Differentials include skin cysts, infections, benign or more sinister type of tumors. My cat's drained abscess is leaking. Is a gaping wound normal? Will it heal?

Yes, that is normal and you actually want the abscess to drain. The gaping wound will fill in eventually and go back to normal. He should not have a deformity but I cannot say for sure without actually seeing the wound for myself. If you would like to post again with some photos we may be able to give you better advice.

It sounds like this wound that became a lump that is oozing fluid has become an abscess, or a pocket of infected fluid. Abscesses form when infection is trapped under the skin or within tissues such as fat or muscle. The bacteria will try to find a way out, so they can break through the skin and create a "draining tract" of pus. This should be addressed by your veterinarian, who will likely drain the abscess and open it up to allow continuous drainage. Antibiotics for at least 2 weeks will be needed, along with pain medications. Depending on the size of the wound/abscess, a bandage may be needed. I hope this is helpful! Anal gland surgery: Is a drainage tube normal? How to ease anxiety?

Depending on how bad the abscess was would say if a drain was needed or not. Your vet probably felt that with how severe it was the abscess still needed to be drained and hat is why the drain was placed. Did they send home pain medication? I would discuss the anxiety with your vet and see if they can dispense not only an anti-inflammatory but a pain medication for him. I would not use marijuana since it can be toxic to dogs. I would start with good pain control to see if that helps. If he is still anxious I would discuss anxiety meds with your vet to see if it will help calm him during this process.
