My cat's drained abscess is leaking. Is a gaping wound normal? Will it heal?

Hi there, and thank you for including the picture as it is helpful. I see the area in question and it looks like a large scab from the incision may have come off. Of course a picture is not as helpful as seeing the wound in person but the underlying tissue looks healthy. This may take several weeks to completely heal and seal closed. I would encourage you to have a follow up appointment with your veterinarian in the next few days to make sure they don’t have any other concerns. In the meantime keep the area clean by using a clean but moist wash rag to compress the area a few times a day. Best of luck and I hope William continues to heal quickly! It sounds like he had an abscess from an injury, probably an altercation with another cat. A veterinarian would likely not suture it anyway to avoid trapping any contaminants and causing another abscess. It looks pretty clean with healthy granulation tissue forming. The antibiotics, even intermittent have probably helped keep further infection at bay. Keep an eye on it, if he will let you, clean it gently with a damp clean washcloth and keep any debris or infected material cleaned out. It should heal from the outside of the wound to the inside, gradually shrinking and closing over the open area. As long as he continues to eat and drink and behave normally, and and the wound continues to look clean with pink and healthy tissue, he should do fine. He needs to eat, going without eating for more than a few days will cause liver problems in cats which would require a vet visit to be treated.

This allows the wound to drain openly, so Lilly doesn’t get an accumulation of infected fluid under the skin (an abscess) again. I think the answer to your question about having her seen sooner depends on how the wound has changed since your veterinarian last saw it. Each veterinarian manages these wounds a little differently. If how it looks now is similar to how it looked at your last veterinary visit, and Lilly is otherwise acting healthy at home, she may not have to be evaluated sooner than her next appointment. If, however, the wound had changed dramatically (is more open, has a different colored fluid exuding from it, has a foul odor) then I recommend Lilly be seen sooner. The only bandage I would recommend would have to be placed by a veterinarian under light sedation, and this is called a “tie-over bandage”. These protect the wound from becoming increasingly more contaminated, and allow for relatively simple bandage changes while the skin in the wound heals. I hope this is helpful! I don't think that it being hard is normal for an abscess, but this appears to be a very large abscess. You should call your vet to discuss this new finding, as they may have some insight depending on the suspected cause and the exam findings. The purpose of the drains is to allow the fluid to be released as the wound is healing. If they weren't there and the hole your vet created closed up, then all of that fluid would be trapped under the skin and it would re-abscess.

This is a draining abscess. Please clean the area with a warm damp cloth until the discharge is gone. Then you can apply a thin film of antibacterial ointment on it. If he’s not neutered I recommend getting him fixed so he doesn’t get into fights. If he’s sick then he probably has a fever from the infection and should have a veterinary exam and antibiotics. Cat bite abscesses are always left open to heal, because they need to be left open to drain. It is very important to keep Leo inside and also to keep the E-collar on, however these wounds need to be left open and take time to heal. If you stitch them up then it will cause the abscess to reform. Sometimes the wound gets so bad that it will need a surgical intervention and repair, however letting it heal by second intention (on it's own without surgery) is the first step and most often-times will heal like that. If pus is continuing to come out then re-visit with your vet as you might need more antibiotics. Best of luck with Leo.

It all sounds normal. Cat bite abscesses can really take a toll on their bodies. Draining is good - it means that the infective material is getting out of the body rather than staying trapped under the skin. You can keep it clean by gently wiping with a warm wet washcloth before applying the topical medication. Decreased appetite and lethargy are also normal, but if they last longer than 24-48 hours, I would call your vet to see if she needs to go in for a recheck. Otherwise, just let her rest and heal.
