Why is my dog's poop abnormal and he has no appetite after ticks?

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed Medium (23 - 60lb) | Male | 7 months old

My dog’s poop doesn’t seem normal at times. He seems to have a loss of appetite. We found two ticks sucking his blood on two occasions. I applied PetArmor plus for dogs. Can you tell from his poop what is wrong with him? Thanks.

It can be hard to say for sure to know exactly what is the cause of his loss of appetite from looking at his stools alone. A full exam and additional diagnostics such as blood work, fecal testing, and x-rays are needed in order to get a good idea.

The one thing I do see with Fendi's feces is stringy mesh like material in the stool which is not normal. If Fendi ate something he shouldn't around the house, this may be the cause of the stringy material. Foreign material such as this can potentially cause gastrointestinal blockages which can be potentially serious.

I would recommend Fendi see his veterinarian very soon for an exam and full work up so a diagnosis can be made and Fendi can receive the most appropriate care and treatment.

Hi there, thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach. Diarrhea is not typically a symptom of tickborne disease so this is probably unrelated. Sometimes diarrhea can be a result of antibiotics, but usually it starts earlier in the course of treatment, so the timing doesn't seem related to that either. More likely she got into something that upset her tummy. As long as she's feeling fine, probiotics are a great idea, and you can feed a bland diet of boiled chicken with white rice for a few days. Once her stools improve, mix the rice/chicken mixture with her kibble to gradually switch her back. If the diarrhea doesn't improve over the next few days, and certainly if she starts acting sick (decreased appetite, vomiting, lethargy, etc), then a vet visit is in order. Hope this helps!

Dog has ticks, lost appetite, and is lethargic. What's wrong?

I would take Cyfer into the vet immediately, as it sounds like he is suffering from a tick borne illness. He needs medical attention right away, and the vet can use blood tests to diagnose if he's suffering from a tick borne illness and treat him accordingly.

My dog is severely ill with fever, chills, and not eating after ticks.

Poor guy. I highly suspect that Ghost may have a tick borne disease that was transmitted when the ticks were feeding on him. I would highly recommend taking him back to your vet for a tick titer test to check for these diseases and also get him started on antibiotics (i.e. Doxycycline is the antibiotic of choice for tick related diseases) right away! If he is still not able to recover well wthin 24 hrs of starting the antibiotics, then you should consider having him hospitalized with IV fluids and around the clock care. His condiiton is not good and I would err on the side of caution. I am so sorry that Ghost is so ill, and I sincerlely hope he is able to make a full and speedy recovery soon. My dog has severe diarrhea after a tick. Could the tick cause it?

Hello and thank you for reaching out to our consultation service. although it is possible to get diarrhea from a tick related disease, it is not common at all. it would be more likely that she has either eaten something that is not agreeing with her or she has a disease or condition unrelated to the tick. If she continues to eat and drink normally as well as wants to play, I would wait for 48 to 72 hours with feeding her regular diet. If after the 72 hours, the diarrhea is still present, she needs to be seen by a veterinarian. If at any point, she starts to act lethargic or vomit, etc., I would take her to the veterinarian as soon as possible so that they can do a physical examination and possibly some diagnostic testing. Why is my finicky dog losing weight after finding ticks on him?

Unfortunately it sounds to me like Rogue has a medical condition that may be causing his decrease in appetite - he could have a tick borne disease, liver or kidney disease or gastrointestinal problem. I really think it would be best to try to see a vet: you can look into Care Credit as a potential payment option. You could try offering a higher calorie food or mixing canned food in with the dry to tempt him to eat, but if he continues to lose weight you should definitely see a vet.

My dog won't eat and has something odd in his poop. Should I worry?

I am sorry that your pet hasn't been eating well. There can be all sorts of reasons for inappetance unfortunately. And it seems our photo of his stool did not come through. If it doesn't look like a worm, then it may be a foreign object that Brady has ingested. If he has not eaten for more than 24 hrs or has any other symptoms to speak of, then a vet visit may be best here to have him fully evaluated. My dog has tick fever and won't eat. What can I do to make him better?

Hi there! If Arlo was bitten by a tick a while ago and is not doing well now, then Arlo may need to be tested for tick borne diseases and put on a month or two on antibiotics. If Arlo is not eating anything, then that is a bit concerning. I would ask your veterinarian to test for tick borne diseases Arlo may be infected with. In the mean time, you may try feeding small amounts of heated food to entice him but I would revisit with your veterinarian about testing and also antibiotics if he is positive for any tick borne diseases.
