My puppy has worms. Should I deworm all my dogs, including seniors?

Round worms are usually treated with pyrantel pamoate which can be used in dogs of all ages. Using a monthly heartworm prevention, like Heartgard, would protect your dogs from heartworms and intestinal parasites so you should talk to your vet about starting Heartgard every month.

As long as the puppy has started its vaccination series, deworming can be done at any time. If deworming is not done right away, this does not cause any increases risk in contracting a fatal parasite. Once an adequate diet has begun, normal bowel movements should occur. Just be sure there are no other health concerns before getting this puppy and the health history of the mom and dad. I hope this helps guide you in the right direction.

At his age Diarrhea can be a sign of a serious condition rather than a simple gastrointestinal upset, i would strongly advice taking him to the vet for a full checkup including blood test to get a full health assessment.

Often puppies from the same litter will have worms. Find a Dewormer that is rated for the size and age of the puppies and use as directed on the box. (PetCo sells Bayer Quad Dewormer that should get all worm types and is rated for puppies 2lbs and up.) It is usually recommended to treat any puppies that are living together all at the same time. Pyrantel (roundworms, hookworms and whipworms) and Drontal plus (also effective against tapeworms) are safe for nursing female dogs. Intestinal parasites are zoonotic/transmissible to humans by fecal/oral contact so be super diligent about hand washing after handling her or her pups. It is likely that all her pups have worms now too but they should be at least 6 weeks of age before deworming with its pyrantel. Good luck and congrats on the puppies!

If the stools are otherwise normal and there is no blood in the stool, then I would recommend the basic dewormer Pyrantel Palmoate, which treats for hookworms and roundworms. If your pets have obviously loose stool, then they may need a broader spectrum dewormer such as Fenbendazole. However it is always advised to get a fecal exam done first through your vet to identify which worms are present. Once that is done, the appropriate dewormer can be selected because not one dewormer will cover all possible intestinal worms).

Worms can be transmitted from dog to dog, although generally the eggs have to be present in the stool for a couple of days before they can infect another dog. I would recommend taking the puppy to your veterinarian so they can determine what type of worm it is. If Shaka is on heartworm prevention there might not be any other treatment required, but your vet might want to check a stool sample or start a dewormer for Shaka if there are eggs in his stool as well. Not all dogs will pass recognizable worms in their stool, but if there are worms in the intestinal tract there should be eggs on a stool analysis.
