My dog has roundworm. What dewormer is safe for my other dogs, including my senior?

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed Large (61lb +) | Male | neutered | 6 years and 2 months old | 90 lbs

one of my three dogs was diagnosed with roundworm. What type of de-wormer do I use? Common sense tells me, I need to de-worm the other two dogs, if so, the de-wormer needs to tolerated by an twelve year old. Thanks for your input.

Round worms are usually treated with pyrantel pamoate which can be used in dogs of all ages. Using a monthly heartworm prevention, like Heartgard, would protect your dogs from heartworms and intestinal parasites so you should talk to your vet about starting Heartgard every month.

You can get any puppy wormer available from the pet store or your vet. For your elderly chihuahua you can get any dog wormer available. Sentry, Panacur, Safeguard are some wormers suitable. for dogs and will cover all worms except tape worms

Treatment should not harm her as long as she is otherwise healthy. The most common side effect of a deworming is some minor stomach upset (vomiting or diarrhea). Not treating her is far riskier to her overall health.
Consider a monthly preventative that will protect against heartworm as well as the 3 most common intestinal parasites: hookworm, whipworm and roundworm. Discuss options/products with your veterinarian.

Pyrantel (roundworms, hookworms and whipworms) and Drontal plus (also effective against tapeworms) are safe for nursing female dogs. Intestinal parasites are zoonotic/transmissible to humans by fecal/oral contact so be super diligent about hand washing after handling her or her pups. It is likely that all her pups have worms now too but they should be at least 6 weeks of age before deworming with its pyrantel. Good luck and congrats on the puppies!

The best medication for this is usually chosen based on a fecal examination to determine which parasite is affecting Ace. The same deworming medication can be given to your other dog. My 4-week-old puppy vomited a worm. What dewormer is safe?

This is a roundworm. He is old enough to give pyrantel a safe dewormer that is for roundworms and hook worms. That dewormer is inexpensive. You may be able to purchase it at your pet or feed store depending on where you live. Otherwise your veterinarian can deworm him. Proton should be dewormed every two weeks until a stool sample comes back negative. When he is old enough to start heartworm medication that also will prevent another parasite infection. Please keep the children away from his poop and wash their hands and yours after handling Proton. People can get roundworms but it is not common with normal hygiene. What's the best safe dewormer for my puppy and her non-nursing mom?

If the stools are otherwise normal and there is no blood in the stool, then I would recommend the basic dewormer Pyrantel Palmoate, which treats for hookworms and roundworms. If your pets have obviously loose stool, then they may need a broader spectrum dewormer such as Fenbendazole. However it is always advised to get a fecal exam done first through your vet to identify which worms are present. Once that is done, the appropriate dewormer can be selected because not one dewormer will cover all possible intestinal worms).

Older dogs are more resistant to parasites and your Yorkie may not have any. If your Yorkie has any health conditions it might be best to have her stool tested by your vet to see if she needs treatment. If she has had a recent vet exam and is in good health it is probably okay to go ahead and deworm her just to be safe.

My puppy has roundworms. How can I treat and prevent future infestations?

Poor pup. Roundworms are very common in puppies, because they can get infected while still in their mothers tummy (in utero) and through the mother's milk. To treat roundworms Harry just needs a broad spectrum dewormer like Pyrantel Palmoate or Fenbendazole. 1 treatment given today and then again in 2 weeks. To prevent roundworm infestations in the future Harry needs to get on a monthly heartworm preventative, which has natural intestinal dewormer in it as well. Harry will need to see a vet to get a prescription for the heartworm preventative (i.e. Heartgard, Trifexis, etc), but the intestinal dewormer can be purchased through your local pet store. Your pup should be just fine once he is treated. : )

Looks like roundworms. There are many OTC dewormers that should work just fine. You can look for one that contains Pyrantel. It is still a good idea to have a vet diagnose what worms or other intestinal parasites are present. And Cujo will need re-treatment in 3 weeks to kill adults that hatch from eggs in the intestines right now.
