My puppy has worms. Can my other dog catch them even if clear?

Most intestinal parasites in dogs are transmitted by fecal-oral transmission. This means that your other dog would have to ingest infected stool from Lenny. I would recommend making sure you are picking up Lenny's stool in the yard and making sure you are washing your hands afterwards. There are a few intestinal parasites that can be transmitted to people so good hygiene, like hand washing, is important. You can always ask your vet to deworm your other dog when they are deworming Lenny just as precaution. If your other dog is already on monthly heart worm prevention (which is important for both dogs' overall health) you may already be covered as many of the heart worm preventions are also dewormers and treat common intestinal parasites. I would talk to your vet about heart worm prevention for Lenny and your other dog if they are not already on it. We generally start puppies on heart worm prevention monthly when they come in for their first set of vaccines.

I would recommend deworming him tomorrow and as a precaution, deworming all other pets and humans in the household is rcommended following the introduction of a new pup. Worm eggs need to be ingested in order to be transmitted so hands should be washed after handling the pup (at all times) and especially before eating. I would never recommend allowing a dog to lick people on the face as there is a small risk they may have worm eggs (or bacteria) in and around their mouth which they could transmit to people

The vaccinations that Storm would have received 2 weeks ago will not have treated any pre-existing worm burden. Worms in puppies is very common and it is possible that Storm had worms prior to playing with the other puppy. They are easily treated and I would recommend contacting your veterinarian so that they can prescribe a suitable course of deworming for your puppy.

You need to clean up the stools as soon as he goes to prevent contamination of the environment. Your son should be ok as long as he isn’t eating the poop. Just make sure to wash his hands after he plays with the puppy or before he eats. You will need to treat Koga twice (3 weeks apart) and the you should be all set. Good luck and kisses to Koga!

Most puppies are born with worms. They can get them from there mother through the placenta. Puppies will have eggs in the poop that are from worms even if you do not see worms in the stool or any scooting. Typically we deworm puppies 2 times due to this. I would recommend a good deworming and picking up feces and throwing it away for a few weeks to prevent infestation of the yard and re infection of ziggy

Just in case, make sure your veterinarian is confirming the presence of roundworms (tapeworms can sometimes be confused for roundworms). If tapeworms are present, Koda will need a special medication. The two most common reasons for persistent infection with roundworms are not yet clearing the infection he was born with (yes, they can be infected in uterus) or your yard is contaminated with roundworm eggs (one study showed roundworm eggs remained infective for 20 years). Since Apollo has been with you for two days, that could be enough time for your other pets to contract worms as well. So yes, I would get medication to deworm your other pets. Keep them all on a regular deworming schedule. I hope this helps!
