I just found a puppy. How do I know its age for vet care?

I am not able to tell from the picture how old your puppy is. The best way to get an accurate age estimate is to have a veterinarian evaluate the puppy. If the puppy’s teeth have erupted then he is at least 6 weeks old. It would also be helpful to know his breed, how much he weighs now, and how big the parents were. I hope this helps. The best way to tell the age of a puppy is by the teeth. Puppies lose certain teeth at a certain age. Have your veterinarian exam the puppy and they will give you a good idea of old it is. Congratulations on the new puppy!

It is impossible to age a pup from pictures, especially without any indication of breed etc. Your vet ir vet nurse may be able to provide some indication from a dental exam as teething is quite predictable in the majority of dogs. Sight and balance would not be expected to be fully developed by 8 weeks

It is only possible to evaluate the age of a puppy up to the age of 6 weeks, this is done according to the teeth (canines teeth grow at the age of 4 weeks, molars at 6 weeks). after that age it is usually a pure educated guess.

We cannot tell you how old the dog is just by looking at a photo. All I can tell you is that if he has all his adult teeth then he is at least 6 months old. Hi and thanks for posting! It is hard to say how old your puppy is without seeing him first. Puppies start to open their eyes 10-14 days after birth, so if his eyes are open then he is at least 2 weeks old but may be older. Determining the age of a puppy is typically done by looking at their teeth which can be done during an initial exam with a veterinarian. Jr will need to be on a puppy milk replacement formula until he is 6-8 weeks old then you can transition him to a commercial puppy food. From th epictures he looks likehe may be a medium-large collie type and should do very well with obedience training and should be intelligent and high energy, Be sure to keep him occupied in order to prevent any desructive tendencies and consider crate training also. HE should be fed 4 times a day at such a young age and be sure to keep him up to date with monthly deworming medications. Your vet can help to estimate his age from his teeth and advise on dates for vaccination schedule
