My Dachshund is in pain. Why is it worse when she poops or pees?

Thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! This is possibly neck or back pain. It could still be pain associated with a leg even if nothing seems wrong with them. I recommend that you have Sprinkles evaluated by your veterinarian for further assessment and treatment. Likely diagnostics include radiographs. Treatment would be based on findings. At the very least they can prescribe pain control medications to make Sprinkles feel better. In the meantime, reduce her activity as much as possible as that in itself can make a big difference. I'm sorry to hear that Chocolate is hurting! Being that she is a dachshund, there's always a concern for a back injury. I would recommend to keep her quiet tonight and do now allow her to do any jumping or stairs. You can apply warmth to the area and gentle massage. Get her in to the veterinarian tomorrow for an exam. The doctor may recommend radiographs and medications. Pancreatitis can also look similiar and they may recommend a test for that as well. Thank you so much for using Pet Coach!

It does sound like a back injury. If he is getting worse (meaning he started out stumbling and then was dragging his limbs then stopped urinating), the best solution for him is surgery. Make sure you talk to the vet about medications and the biggest importance is REST! This means in a cage only- no walking, carry outside to potty and carry back in. I'm so sorry to hear that Chi Chi isn't feeling well. She may have one problem that is causing all her signs or she may have 2 separate problems. I see that she is a Dachshund, and I'm sure you know that they are known for having back problems. So, she may be having back pain that is causing her to not want to jump and not be able to do the stairs normally. Back problems in Dachshunds can be very serious, so I would recommend keeping her rested and having her veterinarian examine her to see if they can find any back pain or abnormalities on her neurological examination. Our biggest fear about black tarry stools is that they can be be due to bleeding in the stomach. If you have given Chi Chi any medications that are not prescribed by your veterinarian, be sure to stop those right away. It sounds as though Faith has not received adequate pain control and this is something that should be addressed. If she is just on an anti-inflammatory, I would consider adding a medication such as Methadone or Tramadol to help ease the pain further if the current medication is not cutting it. If x-rays or an abdominal ultrasound have not been performed yet, I would recommend having these done. A CT scan may also help in determining the source of pain. I hope this helps! Thank you for submitting your question Haily. I recommend that she sees her veterinarian. She could have a sore anal gland due to an infection or impaction. If this is not the case, she could be constipated or even have arthritis in her hips or lower back making it painful to defecate. Her veterinarian will carefully examine her and determine the source of he problem. From there, treatment can be started to make her more comfortable. I hope this information helps!

Not being able to poop isn't a side effect of the medications Trixie is on, and I'm concerned that her not being able to poop is due to her back. Back problems are common in Dachshunds, and pressure on the nerves of the back can cause bowel problems. I'd take her into a vet immediately.
