My dachshund puppy fell and yelped. Should I worry about her back?

Dachshunds can sure hurt their backs but honestly it is not that common to happen in a young 8 week old puppy. If he seems fine and not in pain then he is probably fine. When they injure their back they are very obviously in pain. If you are truly worried about Lenny there is no harm in having your vet check him out. Dachshunds are notorious for hurting their backs due their conformation. They have very long backs compared to other breeds. This makes them more susceptible to injury. They will often walked hunched and scream when picked up. Usually these dogs need strong pain medications, anti-inflammatories and muscle relaxers. I'm glad Hazel seems ok now. It's never wrong to restrict activity for a little bit if you suspect a possible injury. But if she is walking and acting fine I suspect she just has a mild strain right then. In general with dashchunds try to limit her jumping- stairs or ramps are great to help protect her back. And any time she may act sore in her back or wobbly get her straight to the vet.

It sounds like she could have a problem with her back. Intervertebral disc disease is very common in the dachshund breed and she may have a disc that is starting to herniate. She needs to be examined by a vet to evaluate her back and determine the best treatment plan. Your vet may need to take an x-ray of her back. Anti-inflammatory medications, muscle relaxers, and pain medications are used to treat this condition, as well as strict rest. No jumping, running, or playing for 3-6 weeks. I recommend that you have Sprinkles evaluated by your veterinarian for further assessment and treatment. Likely diagnostics include radiographs. Treatment would be based on findings. At the very least they can prescribe pain control medications to make Sprinkles feel better. In the meantime, reduce her activity as much as possible as that in itself can make a big difference. I agree that Bow seems to be in pain. Although the injury could be anywhere in his body, the big concern with his breed is an injury to the neck or spine. With their long bodies, Dachshunds are prone to back injuries. I recommend to have him seen by his veterinarian who will palate the neck, spine and legs to determine what area is injured. They will also try to determine if it is a soft tissue injury or related to the bones. Until you see the doctor, Bow must have strict exercise restriction. Do not allow him to do any more jumping, no running, no stairs, no walks and outside on a leash only. You must be cautious with a potential back issue as it can have serious consequences. Since Mable is still a puppy, I doubt this is a problem. Puppies are still figuring out how their legs work and developing core musculature and back strength. However, Dachshunds are prone to developing back problems. A sign of this can be that a dog with a normally straight back is holding it more arched and less willing to move. If this happens in the future, be sure to have Mabel examined by her vet. For now, as long as Mabel is acting and playing normally, just give her some time to develop. I hope that was helpful!
