What is the DA2HPP vaccine for dogs? Do dogs get flea and tick shots?

It looks like the DA2PLCPV is the distemper parvo vaccine. I'm not sure who sets the prices but that vaccine does contain 5 different diseases so I assume that has something to do with the cost but this vaccine is not extremely expensive. Flea and tick prevention have nothing to do with heartworm prevention or any diseases. Just like heartworm prevention has nothing to do with distemper parvo or fleas and ticks. Dogs require a lot of up keep if you want to do your best to keep them healthy and it is recommended that all dogs stay current on vaccinations. Depending on where you live, fleas, ticks and heartworms can be seasonal but it can also be year round. With the shifting of the human population and the pets they bring with them across the country, parasite prevalence is changing and becoming more of a problem (pets bring the diseases/parasites with them). Speaking with a local veterinarian is your best option to learn Midnight's risk factors and what prevention is needed and when. Also, if Midnight is not spayed, I recommend to get that done. You can avoid many serious (and costly) health conditions by having her spayed. Costs do vary based upon where you live and if you go to a vaccine clinic or not. Unfortunately we do not have "shots" that cover all these problems. The only injections I am aware of that offer some protection are the Program shot, which lasts 6 months and will prevent fleas from reproducing but doesn't kill fleas on your dog, and praziquantel which is an injection for tapeworms. There is also an injection to prevent heartworms called Proheart that is once every 6 months. Most people choose to do topical or oral products for flea/tick/intestinal parasites. My favorite product is Nexgaurd for fleas and ticks, which is a chewable once a month flea and tick preventative. There is a newer oral product called Bravecto which covers fleas and ticks, and lasts 3 months. I haven't used it but have heard great things. For heartworms and intestinal parasites I like the products iverheart, heartgard, sentinel, and interceptor. They prevent heartworms and the more common intestinal worms, and must be given monthly.

She is a pretty girl!!! The most important vaccination (and one required by law) is the Rabies vaccine. This is essential. The second most important vaccine is the Distemper vaccine, which is often a combo vaccine sometimes called a DHPP (protects against distemper, canine hepatitis, parvovirus and parainfluenza). These vaccines are considered the "core vaccines" for dogs. Every dog should have them. The rest will depend on her lifestyle. I also recommend the Leptosporosis vaccine for dogs if they spend time outdoors in areas with creeks/puddles/ponds because this disease is a bacteria transmitted to dogs by contaminated water (rodents who have the disease urinate and it contaminates the water and the dogs can acquire it this way). The Lepto vaccine requries a series of 2 booster 3 to 4 weeks apart if she has never had it before. Other vaccines you may consider would include Lyme if your dog is outdoors and exposed to ticks and you are in a lyme endemic area, Bordetella also known as Kennel Cough if you ever take her to the park/groomer/kennel/dog classes/out for walks in areas with other dogs. Canine Influenza is another vaccine I recommend for dogs that come into contact with many other dogs/areas with many other dogs such as kennels or dog shows/events. That vaccine will also require a series of 2 vaccines several weeks apart if she has never had it before.

Leptospirosis spp vaccine is not a core vaccine and should only be given if necessary, i.e. if your dog has access to water (ponds, ditches, rivers, etc.) where rats may live and urinate in the water. DPP is vaccine against distemper, distemper, hepatitis (canine adenovirus-2 and -1), parvovirus, and parainfluenza., parvovirus, and parainfluenza and is one of the necessary core vaccines. It would be better to also include vaccination against hepatitis (canine adenovirus-2 and -1). Lyme vaccine is also a non-core vaccine ans should only be given if called for in your area. Your veterinarian will be able to advise you more specifically.

Common vaccination protocol usually used includes DHPPi (distemper, hepatitis, parvovirus and parainfluenza) and L (leptospira) and possibly Rabies and Kennel cough (KC) vaccine. Yes, the distemper/parvo (DHPP) combination vaccinations that we use in puppies are the same as those we use in adults, but some of the ingredients in some of the combination vaccinations are not given until the puppies are older. I would recommend speaking to your veterinarian about which viruses should be included in puppies vaccinations, but they are generally canine distemper, infectious hepatitis, parainfluenza and parvovirus. Corona virus may or may not be recommended and Leptospirosis should not be given until a puppy is older. Good luck! I hope that was helpful.
