How to comfort my clingy dog in heat and keep her safe from mating?

I'm sorry to hear Cheche isn't doing well! It sounds like you are already doing as much as possible to try and make her comfortable at home. If she is still very anxious or stressed, it is a good idea to talk with your vet to see if an anxiety medication could be given temporarily to help her through her heat cycle. Patience, keeping up with the calming techniques you are trying, and a little help from your vet will hopefully help Cheche relax.

Heat cycles can change a pet's behavior. You can try over the counter calming formulas for dogs but many pets do not respond to them. Your veterinarian also carries sedatives that may help. Doggy diapers are definitely a good way to keep from having to clean-up blood all day. The cone may be necessary if she tries to take off the diaper, but some dogs tolerate the diaper well. Keeping her outside is another option if the weather is OK, but make sure you have a good fence to keep out any possible intact males in the neighborhood...they will smell her from a mile away. Getting her spayed will prevent future cycles. You can have this done about a month after she's out of heat. She doesn't want to come inside and keeps scratching the door because she wants to go outside to find males with which she can mate. She is likely whining as well because she wants to be outside to roam. Her appetite may be decreased due to her interest elsewhere. Pretty much she is focused on mating at this point. The only want to stop this behavior is to have her spayed once her heat is over. This will keep her from having these behavioral changes, and will also have many health benefits as well, including a significant reduction in the risk of developing mammary tumors and eliminating the chance she develops a pyometra (a life threatening infection of the uterus). Otherwise, you are just going to have to wait it out until her heat is done. You may have to carry her back inside, and I'd keep her in a room away from the front door to keep her from scratching at it. You can try tempting her to eat by mixing in some boiled white meat chicken (no bones) with her dog food, or you can soak her dry food in low sodium chicken broth. I hope this helps!

This is not due to stress it is likely due to the hormones she is emitting and what Anakin is picking up on.
