My dog's first heat: tried everything, still anxious. What helps?

Heat cycles can change a pet's behavior. You can try over the counter calming formulas for dogs but many pets do not respond to them. Your veterinarian also carries sedatives that may help. Heavy exercise for both pets tends to help with undesirable behavior and keeping them separated until this passes. This is quite normal behaviour especially during a first heat cycle and will pass over 1-2weeks. I would be cautious about starting any new 'comfort' routines as they may be very difficult to break away from when the heat stops naturally. Plenty of exercise (in confined areas away from intact males) will help to keep her ocuppied

Maizy will urinate more than normal due to her heat cycle. I recommend to have her spayed in 8 weeks. The excessive urination from the heat cycle will stop. Otherwise the only strong enough medication that would work would have to obtained from your Vet. Drugs like Trazadone, acepromazine, Xanax, etc are prescription only. I would doubt that an over the counter medication will control this for you. I would contact your Vet and see if they will prescribe something over the phone but they may require an exam first. No, stress should not alter her normal heat cycle. Older non neutered females are very prone to womb infections which can be severe and life threatening. Any changes in timing, volume or color is a concern and full health check would be recommended as soon as possible, urgently if any fever, vomiting or weakness is present

You can try the calming treats but they may not help much. Vigorous activity every day like running or playing fetch will likely be most beneficial for him. Spaying and neutering provide health benefits for both sexes and I recommend to have both pets fixed. Henry can be neutered at any point but he will still have sperm in the reporoductive tract for about a month so he can still impregnate a female in heat.
