Should I put organic coconut oil on my dog's dry, cracked paws?

Hi there and thank you for using pet coach to address your concern. Coconut oil is ok to use but I habe seen better success using a product called Biobalm by Dermoscent, which can be found online quite easily. I hope this helps! One of my favorite products for paws is called Mushers Secret ( http://www.musherssecret.net/ ). It is very thick and moisturizing, but does not have a strong scent or flavor to it, so most dogs will not lick their feet after applying it. There are a number of other good products on the market as well. Many people like coconut oil, but I find that it is too greasy and causes my dogs to lick their feet after it is applied. Be sure that Chance is on a good quality puppy food as well because that will help long term.

There are a number of good commercial products that can be applied to the paw pads to help protect them from getting too dry and cracked. I'm unsure which products are available in Finland, but I have had good luck with Musher's Secret in the snow and winter.

I have tried coconut oil on my dogs' paws, but it is more greasy and it made them lick their paws, so I have had better luck with a commercial product that does not smell quite as tasty! But it is fine to try and can be used daily if needed.

Although I think Pro Plan is a great diet, you may try Royal Canin as it tends to be a little better for skin. You could also supplement an additional Omega 3 fatty acid (make sure it's made for dogs). Lastly, look for a product like Baely's Paw Shield or you could also use Coconut oil. Adding oils can help some pets with dry skin, but it can take 6-8 weeks to take effect, and in my opinion it doesn't make a very big difference. Omega 3 oils would be best to try. The biggest side effect is greasy or loose stools. Dry or cracked paws could be caused by excessive licking, or it could happen with allergies or autoimmune disease. I would recommend having Pavi checked out by the vet to see if this may be the case.

Some dogs try to lick it off, however, so I would recommend being conservative with it and only apply a very thin amount. I hope this helps!

Thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! For dry pads you can use a moisturizing cream such as the one made by Tomlyn which you get from amazon. It works great for this scenario. It is hard to know if this is truly needed without being able to see it and examine it though this is usually a good option in most cases. Good luck!

What can I put on my dog's dry, cracked paws from hot concrete?

Poor Sky! Sure to always touch the concrete to make sure it is not too hot as pets can get serious injury. Avoid walking Sky during the hot time of the day. Walk in the very early mornings or in the evenings after the temperature has dropped. Booties can help as well to protect her feet from hot temperatures. Also make sure she does not lick at the feet (have her wear an elizabethan collar at all times) and keep her on soft surfaces with no walks, running or jumping until the tissue is fully healed. You can apply a dab of coconut oil and rub it in well. Make sure she does not lick this as it can cause GI upset. You can also purchase the balm that mushers use on sled dogs. If the area does not start looking better or if it begins to look worse at any point, have her examined by the veterinarian. I hope this helps and please feel free to post any additional questions.

My cat's paw pads are crusty & pink. Should I stop using coconut oil?

Poor Tigger! It's possible the coconut oil is tasty, and thus causing him to lick more than he normally would, further irritating the foot pads. It would be best to stop using it and place an Elizabethan (cone) collar on Tigger for a few days to give his feet a chance to rest and heal. If the irritation doesn't resolve, or you see open wounds or sores on the feet, then having a vet examine it to rule out problems such as bacterial or yeast infections is best.

What's the best at-home treatment for my dog's paw hyperkeratosis?

Hi there and thank you for using Pet Coach! I recommend using a product called BioBalm by Dermoscent. Bayer makes this product and you can find this easily online. For the long hair like pieces, I usually recommend having these trimmed (there are no nerves going to these pieces and it is painless to have these trimmed back). I would recommend having this done at your veterinarian's clinic where they can trim them there using clippers or a dremmel file. Once these have been made shorter, the BioBalm can be applied 3 times daily. It may take several months for this balm to work well but I have seen cases such as Allie's dramatically improve.
