My dog keeps swallowing and gulping constantly. Should I be concerned?

It's possible Milly may have something caught in her throat or nose (such as a grass seed), or has gotten into something causing her to feel nauseated (dogs will drool, swallow and gulp if they feel ready to vomit). If the symptoms continue or she starts gasping for air/turning blue, it is best to seek veterinary care immediately.

The most common reason that dogs will have exaggerated swallowing without any obvious reason is if they have irritation in their esophagus. This can occur from a number of reasons. Sometimes these dogs have had an episode of vomiting that has irritated the esophagus or sometimes they have some acid reflux from their stomach into the esophagus which is irritating the esophagus. Since it has been going on for 3 months, it is worth having your vet evaluate it. I would recommend taking a video of an episode for your vet to see during the appointment time. Your vet may recommend an acid reducer like Pepcid or Prilosec or may recommend a prescription medication to coat the esophagus like Sucralfate. Good luck! I hope that was helpful. Poor girl. Her repeated swallowing behavior and eating grass suggest that Snickers is likely nauseous. She may have eaten something that upset her stomach or may even have something caught in her throat. See if you can get her to open her mouth so you can take a peek towards the back of her throat for any foreign objects. IF she does not allow you to do so and otherwise seems fine, just let her rest tonight and get her examined in the morning by your regular vet if the problem continues. I have seen this a lot in dogs that have a stick stuck to the roof of their mouth, so a foreign object is highly suspected here. In most cases, if the pet isn't vomiting and still eating, the problem can be resolved with your vet's help. I hope that your fur baby Snickers gets some relief soon! Best wishes and take care.

It sounds as Baby is suffering from a gastrointestinal condition, possibly an infection. it could also be due to ingestion of a foreign body material. i would recommend taking her to the vet the first chance you get, she will need to be checked first, if the vet thinks it's a simple gastrointestinal infection she will need an anti nausea injection, antibiotics and a special food for a few days in order to get better. if the vet thinks it is more serious she will need a blood test and possibly an ultrasound in order to find out what is wrong.

It's definitely not healthy for her to do that and it could be due to her diet but i could not tell you that for sure as there are many conditions that could cause such a reflux, for example excessive acidity in the stomach, pancreatitis, gastrointestinal infections and many more, i would recommend taking her o the vet in order to get it checked and treated.

Puppies are notorious for swallowing anything that crosses their path. They don't have hands, so they explore everything with their mouths. He may have swallowed something that is stuck, there may even be a piece of string looped around the base of his tongue. Hopefully your vet did a thorough oral examination, including lifting the tongue in order to see underneath. This area is very hard to see and string can hide there very easily. It could be a long human hair that is bothering him. If you find string, thread or hair in his mouth that goes down his throat, DO NOT PULL IT. Same goes for any you may see as he tries to defecate. NEVER pull on any linear foreign body. It could be looped around some soft tissue out of sight and you will cause more damage. Any stringlike material caught around the tongue should be cut with a pair of safety scissors and allowed to go on down. If this happens, let your vet know what is going on and if he develops any other symptoms, such as vomiting, diarrhea, lethargy, loss of appetite, get him back in to see your vet right away.

I can give you a home remedy to see if that helps. Feed her a bland diet of boiled white meat chicken (no bones) and white rice in small amounts several times a day for a couple of days. Then slowly add back in her normal diet. If this behavior continues on the bland diet, she refuses to eat the bland diet, she vomits the bland diet, develops diarrhea, stops drinking water, starts vomiting water, or becomes very lethargic, she will need to see a vet right away.
