Why does my chihuahua stare at the sky like he sees something?

If Louie is otherwise acting normally (normal appearance regarding appetite, thirst, peeing, stools, walking, playing, and sleeping), it sounds like either a noise or a smell has his attention and may be activating his instinctive response to be alerted and cautious. Mice or other pests are common culprits as dogs can often smell or hear them through openings such as electrical outlets or light fixtures in walls. Strange behavior can also indicate early onset neurologic disease, so if nothing can be found that he may be looking for, please have him examined by your veterinarian, especially if he starts having any other abnormal behavior, trouble walking, trouble hearing, or other signs of neurologic disease. Any abrupt behavioral change is a good excuse to get him in to see your vet. He may be starting to develop a medical condition that should be investigated but it's so early that the only symptom he is displaying is this strange behavior. There may be something happening periodically that is making him uncomfortable of the feeling comes and goes, but either way, it should be looked into by your vet. Your vet will do a thorough exam, possibly some x-rays and/or bloodwork, as indicated. Based on these results your vet will have a better idea what is going on and be better able to advise you as to what action should be taken.

Since I am unable to examine Tia, I would have her examined by your veterinarian to ensure this is nothing serious. If she is acting strange, she could have had a seizure or may be about to have seizure. Certain systemic illnesses may also exhibit similar symptoms. What your are describing are vestibular signs, although hit could be caused by head trauma, it's more likely to be either a severe ear infection or a brain disease (possibly a tumor). I would recommend you to take Moxie to the vet ASAP.

Poor Gizmo. He could have an ear infection, vestibular disease, or possibly a tumor. He should be examined by a vet to determine the cause. He may need an antibiotic or other medications to help. Hope he feels better soon!

It is possible that he is thinking/seeing/smelling something. However, if you feel like he is not acting normally during one of these episodes, you may want to have him checked out by a vet. It is possible there is a medical cause for this behavior, such as seizures or epilepsy or low blood glucose. Try to get a video of this happening to share with the vet so maybe they can figure out what is going on.

I still recommend to have Chico examined today. That abnormal behavior could have been caused by a seizure, a heart condition or a low blood sugar episode (which is HIGHLY abnormal in an adult dog and often indicate liver disease). The doctor will need to check some bloodwork to look for various causes of seizures and liver abnormalities. They will also check the heart and then discuss their findings and your options. Best to play it safe.
