My chihuahua puppy bites. Vomiting/coughing after milk. Vet & toy help?

Inhalation of even a small amount of milk in a tiny little puppy like this can be deadly if treatment is not instituted right away. Aspiration pneumonia is one of the most common causes of death in bottle babies. If you are noting significant coughing / choking, I would also keep an eye out for increased respiratory noises. This would include wheezing and raspy hoarse noises. If you hear this, it would probably be a good idea to stop feeding until you get him to the vet. At that point, the doctor will decide if providing additional nutrition orally is worth the risk, versus injectable nutrition. Hope this is help.

Taking Osito to a puppy class to help his burn off some excess energy and learn how to play appropriately is also very important, as is regular exercise that can provide an outlet for his energy.

Hi, thanks for using PetCoach! Burping is from swallowing too much air. Be sure she is eating slowly. If she eats fast then use the special bowels to slow her down. Burping and hiccups are usually outgrown. Biting in puppies is very common and the number one complaint I get from puppy owners. They do grow out of it. I recommend when they start biting to stop playing with them and put them in a "time out." Do not use your hands to play with them. There should always be a toy between your hands and their mouths. Basic training is a must and can be started now. When she starts to bite she should be told to "sit" or "leave it." I am not a fan of negative reinforcement of puppies. Poor Mimi  The hives and itchy patches can be caused by an allergic reaction, and antibiotics can cause vomiting as a side effect. What I'm concerned about is the black poop, which indicates bleeding from the upper GI tract. She sounds very sick, and you cannot treat this at home. Please take her into a vet immediately.

Tzipora is sure a cutie! What the behaviorist recommend is withdrawing attention from her when she is biting. Yelp very loud and completely remove yourself from her- even if you have to close a door. We need to get her to know that biting on toys is ok and biting you is not. Try to use toys that you can put peanut butter in that will distract her. I would HIGHLY recommend finding a good trainer in your area. There are lots of trainers, but call your veterinarian to find a good one. A good trainer will help you figure out what is causing the biting and a plan to stop it. The good thing is that you are seeking help early. I know that the puppy stage can be frustrating, but with a good trainer- it will be ok. Once she is learning commands- such as sit. I would worry that the gagging or trying to vomit and acting more tired is because she has a GI problem (viral/bacteria, ate something gross, parvo, intestinal parasites, etc.) If she is coughing and the coughing ends in a gag or vomit motion then that isn't vomiting but coughing with a terminal retch. Causes of coughing are: Kennel cough or pneumonia which would be unrelated to the sore butt. If she is coughing, weak and lethargic and not eating then I would have her seen when your Vet opens for an exam. She is very tony at 2.5 lbs and could get sicker quickly. This is normal behavior for many dogs - some dogs enjoy chewing and swallowing their toys, which is unsafe and so with those dogs we need to be careful of the types of toys they get, and only let them play with toys when they're supervised. If Buddy continues doing this, he runs the risk of getting a GI obstruction, if he ever swallows a piece that he can't vomit back up and can't pass through in his stool. In the most serious cases, we have to do surgery to remove objects that get stuck in their GI tract! Kong toys tend to be some of the most durable for these dogs - make sure you get toys that are big and tough enough that Buddy can't chew it into pieces, and only let him play while supervised.
