When will I know if my Border Collie puppy has long or short hair?

That is a loaded question. Older pets can lose their hair for several reasons including undergoing Hypothyroidism, Cushings disease (an adrenal gland problem), flea allergies, Demodexx mites (can be seen in older dogs who have a weakened immune system) or even a seasonal alopecia is possible. I would start with a good examination, thyroid test and potential bloodwork if Cushing disease is suspected (based on the orientation of the alopecia and overall health of Sugar). This will depend on the genes he got from both his mother and father. There is likely a 50/50 chance that he will be either. I am afraid you may have to wait it out until Tony loses his baby hair and grows his adult hair.

She is young and does not have her full adult coat in yet. make sure she is on a good quality puppy food. You can brush her regularly as this can help. Give her more time as her puppy coat will start to change into her adult coat and the texture and length can still change.

Puppies are born with a soft hair coat known as their "puppy coat". I have seen this fall out as early as 3 months of age and is replaced by adult fur. This is a very lanky breed until they fill out, sometimes after 1 year of age. The best you can do is keep Bryn on a puppy food (following the directions on the food label for how much) and make sure she gets plenty of exercise to build lean muscle.

Based on the black and white markings and the length of the coat, I would say your puppy looks most like a border collie. As they get older, the characteristics of the specific breed can become more apparent. What a cutie!

She is just too young at the moment but with time if fed a proper complete puppy diet, it will happen as she continues to grow. Not all pup's hair growth is the same which is probably why her coat is not as long as her siblings. If at any point, she develops any itchiness then have her evaluated by your veterinarian to ensure there is not any underlying skin condition. Good luck!
