My 7-month-old Border Collie puppy looks thin with long legs. Is this normal?

There is not a photograph attached to this post. If she is too thin, I recommend to increase her food intake. Also make sure she is current on her deworming medication. Puppies at her age are lanky, they are like teenagers so being thin is normal. They don’t generally begin to fill out until closer to one year of age. Trusty is a beautiful boy! The best thing you can for Trusty which is feeding a high quality dog food. Trusty does need to eat a large breed puppy formula. Stick with ProPlan or Royal Canin. I'm not sure the diet you are feeding is the correct one. It will say on the bag if it is intended for large breed puppies. He should eat this until he is 12 months old. Growth is genetic. A dog will not be any bigger than it's genes allow for. Growth in large breed dogs also needs to be slow to help prevent orthopedic conditions like dysplasia. Additionally, he will continue to grow (in height) until he is 12 months old. He will begin to fill out from 12-18 months of age (roughly). Hello. I would agree that the female does not have the typical confirmation of a border collie. This may indicate a possible congenital problem, a type of dwarfism, but most likely there were two fathers for this litter. Because of the way a female dog ovulates, you could have two different males inseminate a single pregnancy. The only other option is the breeder intentionally duped you. Puppies do go through some growth phases and can go through lanky periods. This is not unusual or anything to be concerned with. Being thin while they are developing is beneficial. It is however important to increase the amount of food you are feeding as Kasper gets bigger. If he is looking thin, it's likely time to increase the amount of food you are feeding. I can’t tell from the photos of the pups are too thin. In general you should be able to see the last rib when the dog is turning his body. If you are seeing more than that, he may be too thin. You should make sure parasites are not a problem as they will cause pets to be thin. It could also be related to diet. Some food have better quality proteins that are easier to digest. I recommend a brand called Royal Canin. Your pup’s are also still growing so they do tend to stay lanky longer. Most giant breed dogs are not physically mature until 18 months old. A visit to your veterinarian can accurately access the dog’s body condition (as well as check the stool for parasites). I am not really sure what you are worried about. I would not be overly concerned about anything related to his looks until he is full grown (about 18 months of age). You absolutely don't want a large breed puppy to grow too fast as that can cause joint abnormalities so be careful of this. He should be eating a large breed puppy food so I hope the Royal Canin you are feeding is this type of diet and not just a general puppy food. Based on your description, I would recommend having a veterinarian examine her and also have x-rays taken of her legs / hips and see if there are any developmental abnormalities. Just the other day, I had a 6 month old dog with such severe hip dysplasia, one hip was dislocated and the other was on the verge due to the severe dysplastic nature of the hip joints.
