Why is my black and white dog's fur turning orange? Is it normal?

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed Small (up to 22lb) | Female | unspayed | 22 lbs

My dog’s fur is black and white but recently, she has been growing in some orange fur. She’s a Jack Russell mixed with a Dalmatian. Her ears and face have grown orange. The orange is part of her fur too. It’s not really a stain or anything.

Thank you for your question about Aspen. Dogs can occasionally have changes in the appearance of their hair/change in hair color over time. If Aspen is acting normally otherwise I would just continue to monitor her. Be sure she isn't licking herself because licking leaves saliva on the fur which can then change the color of the fur to a rust color. If she is licking then this can be a sign of allergies or other skin irritation. Look closely at her skin under the fur for any signs of redness/bumps/scratches. If she has any changes in her appetite, energy level, water intake, or bowel habits notify your veterinarian.

This may be a normal aging change for her. As puppies lose their puppy coats the adult fur can change color and the skin pigment can darken also. If the skin looks normal with no sores I wouldn't worry about it. If she is itchy that may cause changes in the skin color. A veterinary visit is indicated if you are seeing abnormal areas on the skin.

I wouldn't worry too much about the hair change unless it appears like he is loosing fur, the skin around the fur is red, inflamed, scabbing, or infected-you will want to see your veterinarian if that is the case.

As long as the skin below is normal appearing (looks like it from the pictures, but can't be 100%), this would be a condition known as leukotrichia. The cause of this is a bit of a mystery, but the good news is that it is not harmful. I would want to check that the skin appears normal before saying for sure though. It can be normal as a dog ages, or the underlying skin is more visible. If the area isn't irritated, red, itchy, or bothersome to Tanner I wouldn't worry. However if you are seeing rapid changes in the area, hair loss, irritation, redness, or swelling these can indicate something else going on such as an infection, parasites or allergic response, which should be checked out by your vet.
