Why is my Pomeranian growing a patch of black fur on his back?

It can be normal as a dog ages, or the underlying skin is more visible. If the area isn't irritated, red, itchy, or bothersome to Tanner I wouldn't worry. However if you are seeing rapid changes in the area, hair loss, irritation, redness, or swelling these can indicate something else going on such as an infection, parasites or allergic response, which should be checked out by your vet.

For some dogs the coat and pigment in the fur can change with age. For some dogs the coat will also grow back differently after a close shave. As long as the skin underneath the dark hairs appears normal I wouldn’t be concerned about a change in fur color.

If your pet ever sustained an injury to that area in the past, even a mild infection or burn, the hair follicles can be affected & color can change months to even years later. So, if she is not bothered by the area, you feel no lumps, bumps, roughness, see no redness or dermatitis, then this may just be a normal change in an unusual area. Hello. It is not uncommon when there has been damage to the hair follicles, that the hair can regrow a different color or even a different texture. I have seen pets that have sustained severe bites or burns regrow coats lighter or darker, but the most amazing one was a little short haired rat terrier that regrew a coat like a little lamb. It did stay this way for his life, but never seemed to affect him. I would not be too concerned as this is just the way Brownie's bodied repaired the damaged follicles. Hi there and thank you for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach to address your question. As long as the skin beneath is healthy looking, this is not going to cause harm to Cookie. Hair coat color change can be due to numerous factors including (but not limited to) genetics, environmental temperature, previous trauma to hair follicles, systemic hormonal disease, etc. If this was sudden that the hair coat changed color, I would recommend having Cookie examined by a veterinarian and have her blood tested just to be on the safe side so that any recommendations for additional diagnostics and treatments can be made. This may be a normal aging change for her. As puppies lose their puppy coats the adult fur can change color and the skin pigment can darken also. If the skin looks normal with no sores I wouldn't worry about it. If she is itchy that may cause changes in the skin color. A veterinary visit is indicated if you are seeing abnormal areas on the skin.

If this area is flat and not growing, it is likely not a cause for concern. If the areas become raised or rapidly changes, then he will need to see a veterinarian.
