What causes a healthy dog's black fur to turn white in spots?

It is difficult to tell in these photos, but if your dog's fur itself is turning white/color fading away without loss of the hair itself it could be a condition called vitiligo. This causes loss of the pigment of the skin and hair. Often it is a harmless condition but can sometimes be seen with some autoimmune disorders so it is recommended to have an exam done by Tyson's vet to be on the safe side.

It could be normal (meaning they are turning to a different shade of black) or could be cause by inflammation of the skin or hair follicles. I would recommend that you have a vet take a quick look at Chow to see if there is a medical concern.

I am sorry to hear about Michief. It is possible he could have vitiligo, which causes a loss of pigmentation of the skin/fur in dogs. There will be multiple darker spots on the belly. The spots can grow, change and fade as the dog ages. They are flat with the skin, there is no redness and they do not bother the dog. If this seems to be the case for him, testing should not be needed. This is not a cause for concern. If the bumps are itchy or develop scabs, then this is different and could indicate an infection. I am sorry but it is difficult to see the spots in these pictures on my end. Spots that you describe could be a minor discoloration from debris or actual dirt/debris. If the skin underneath is the normal color and not irritated then I wouldn't be too concerned. If she is ever itchy, skin changes color, or bothered, then I would have your vet take a look at it. If Aspen is acting normally otherwise I would just continue to monitor her. Be sure she isn't licking herself because licking leaves saliva on the fur which can then change the color of the fur to a rust color. If she is licking then this can be a sign of allergies or other skin irritation. Look closely at her skin under the fur for any signs of redness/bumps/scratches. If she has any changes in her appetite, energy level, water intake, or bowel habits notify your veterinarian.

As long as the skin underneath the black spot appears normal and is not itchy I wouldn't be too concerned. The color of the fur can change as a result of itching and skin inflammation so if the skin is abnormal I would take Chuy to see a veterinarian.
