How can I best praise my young puppy and tell her she's a good girl?

She is right . . . to a point. If your dog gets all sorts of "free love," he won't be inclined to work for praise, nor will he value it as much because he can get it any time. When you are in the initial training phase with Nero, praise him only when he does well. An occasional "nice puppy" is okay, but keep affection to a minimum and save it for rewards during work sessions. You will be able to reintroduce praise and petting gradually once he responds to commands in a timely manner.

Your puppy is still a bit young for lots of training, he is still a baby. I suggest you book in to a puppy training class once his vaccinations are done. As for treats, it is not always necessary to give food treats. Praising is a great treat and works just as well, if not better. In the beginning when training, treats train dogs to do these commands due to positive reinforcement. At a certain point, dogs will respond to commands regardless of getting treats or not because they become conditioned to the response to the command. At this age, you will likely have to continue giving Grace treats to get the response you want. Gradually reduce the frequency at which she receives treats and try and get her to respond to a command without a treat. Rather than a treat, try praising her and telling her how good she is. Oh wow what a cutie!!! Absolutely you can give her treats. I like the blue buffalo treats but really there are a lot of good ones at any pet store. You just want to use treats that are small and generally low in calories. Good luck!

The best training treats are ones that your dog really loves and that can be broken into very small treats. This is especially important with a small dog like Bella.
