What's the best flea and tick product for my 90lb one-year-old dog?

Thank you for submitting your question regarding Buddy. I prefer to use a topical liquid for flea and tick prevention. The reasoning being this will prevent the spread of disease from ticks. All oral products require the patient to actually be bitten by the tick for the prevention to work. The bite is how tick born diseases are spread. My favorite product is Vectra 3D. It also repels mosquitoes so it works in conjunction with your dog's monthly heartworm prevention. This is a huge benefit. It is also effective against lice, certain types of mites and biting flies. Unfortunately, natural products are not going to effective. The diseases spread by ectoparasites can be a serious threat to your pet. A lot of times there are manufacturer rebates available when you purchase Vectra 3D. I hope this information helps!

Fleas are very small jumping parasites. They will leave black flecks on the pet known as flea dirt. Ticks are larger, usually brown in color and attach themselves to a pet in order to draw blood. Of all topical medications, I generally find K9 Advantix II to be the most effective. Of the two you mentioned, I find Vectra 3D to be more effective. There are also oral flea/tick preventatives (Nexgard and Bravecto) available that seem to be superior to any topicals.

I typically recommend Vectra 3D. It covers fleas, ticks, mosquitos, biting flies, lice and some mites. I like it as it can repel these pests. So your dog doesn't have to be bit for the medication to work. This helps to prevent the spread of disease. Vectra 3D also adds another layer of protection against heartworm disease by repelling mosquitos. It can be applied in additional to oral heartworm prevention.

In my opinion and that of many of my class mates is that Frontline is starting to fail and all of us are seeing flea infestation breakthroughs from it. It personally happened to all of my pets over one year ago. I used Frontline for years without problems then the summer of 2016 changed. All 3 dogs and one cat had flea problems. I went to another product (Bravecto) and the problem dissolved after one dose so I know it wasn't some horrible environmental problem. I like Vectra 3D because it has a repellent nature to it. It is becoming increasing important for heartworm protection also since it can repel mosquitoes. We are starting to see heartworm resistance in the gulf states and it's not that people are giving the heartworm pills. There is actual resistance in some mosquitoes to heartworm pills and pairing the heartworm pills up with a topical flea/tick with repellent characteristics is being advised in the deep south to combat the problem. Ticks can be difficult to manage - even with some of these high-quality preventatives! Instead of using the Vectra 3D and Seresto products, consider using an oral flea/tick preventative, such as Nexgard or Bravecto. In my experience, these products seem to be more effect for both flea and tick prevention, but both are prescription based. If you prefer using topical preventatives for Orion, Advantix is another option that I tend to prefer. I would not recommend using additional topical sprays while he is also receiving the topical Vectra 3D. While all of these products are labeled for tick prevention, in reality, they can take a bit of time to work and actually kill the tick. If you find ticks that are attached to Orion, be sure to remove them with all of their head and mouthparts. Ticks need to be attached for around 24+ hours in order to transmit disease.

Thank you for submitting your question regarding Benson. There are a variety of safe flea and tick preventive medications. I prefer topical formulas because the flea or tick is repelled. When you give an oral chew the flea or tick has to bite your pet to die. This will still kill the pest, but it allows diseases to spread to your pet. For that reason, I prescribe Vextra 3D. Frontline Plus is also a good product, but does not cover quite as many pests as Vectra. Vinegar and water will not be effective. I hope this information helps!
