Can my bell-trained puppy use a balcony pee pad on vacation?

Belle should avoid areas where there may be unvaccinated dogs, but you will need to take her outside to potty train her and it may not go as well if you try to wait until she is fully vaccinated. Keep her on a leash and avoid contact with other dogs. Belle may get confused if there are pee pads indoors and she may use them. I doubt she will help Molly go outside but you could work on potty training the two of them together.

You would want to train Clarice to it just like you would regular potty training. Dogs are very substrate-specific, and at her age she likely is used to going on actual dirt or grass. You may want to add some dirt to where you are trying to teach her to go, and take her every hour or so to keep giving her chances to sniff and try it out. If she does go, rewarding with her praise and treats can help.

It can be confusing to train a puppy to go in the house (which is what using a pee pad really is) and also to do her business outside. She can certainly be out long enough to go in all types of weather. You can hold an umbrella over her if necessary.

If you can't get her to go inside, you can take her outside and use a pad under her. Try to use an area with a hard surface as opposed to grass or soil in case she misses the pad. A hard surface is easier to decontaminate than grass or soil. After she is done, you can sanitize the surface using a diluted bleach solution. If she will go inside, use the pads and dispose of them accordingly afterwards.

Hi, thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! It is going to take several weeks to months to train her to a new substrate preference. Carry her to the same patch of grass each time and keep her on a leash. Give her 10-15 mins to go to the bathroom. You can also carry her poop and put it on the grass or put a rag you previously used to clean up her pee so she can smell her scent. When she goes verbally praise her and give her a great treat then play with her outside for 10 mins. If she does not go, then she either goes in to the crate or is leashed to an adult until you can take her out again in 15-30 mins to try again. She can not come out of the crate or be off a leash until she goes outside. All bedroom doors need to be close and she should be gated from wandering off to go somewhere in the house. Do not use negative reinforcement if she goes in the house. Train her to ring a bell to notify you she needs to go out. The key is to always know where she is and to not allow her to have the opportunity to go inside. She can be allowed to be unsupervised once there has been 3 months of no accidents in the house. As a side note I found the beagles are the hardest to train. Especially if they were rescued from a lab or hoarding situation or grew up crated. I hope this helps and I wish you all the very best!

If you want her to go potty outside only, I would remove the potty pads as this is likely just confusing her. Giving her the option of both may confuse her as to where the appropriate place to go potty is. Instead, taking her out every 1-2 hours, and establishing a routine of going out after eating, drinking, playing, waking up, etc, can help get her used to the fact that outside = go potty time, along with your treats and rewards. If she has an accident inside, moving her outside to let her finish is best, as well as using an enzymatic cleaner to remove any residue and discourage going potty there again. Hi there! Thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! This is not an uncommom issue. I recommend that you try the training pad spray that you put on the pad. This would help your pup identify the right place to do her business. You can get this at your local pet store. Given that she learned how to let you guys know when she wants to go outside, she is for sure very smart so I'm sure she will learn this as well. Try to keep the blankets off the flour at least for now while she learns. Remember to praise and reward her when you notice the desired behavior. Good luck!
