How to adopt a street dog and get free or low-cost rabies shots?

There is no way for us to be able to tell you with 100% certainty that it would be safe to catch/touch/adopt a street dog. If the dog is not aggressive you can try to catch it and then take it to a vet for an exam and vaccines. The vet can give you more information about how to proceed from there. The biggest concern is you getting bitten by a stray dog that may have rabies.

Hello. It is best to have this puppy examined by a veterinarian as soon as possible to check & treat for any intestinal parasites & any possible coat or skin issues such as mange, fleas & ticks. The veterinarian can guestimate the puppies age & recommend the vaccinations that are appropriate to the puppies age & what diseases are present in your area. I would err on the side of caution. As Rabies is quite prominent in India and you do not know what the Rabies vaccine status of the dog that bit this dog or the dog that was bitten is, I would avoid trying to catch the dog. If you have a animal care and control in India, I would contact them and let them know that there is an injured dog where you live or see if there is a rescue that can help. Beyond that, I wouldn't touch the dog with the risk of Rabies. I hope this helps guide you in the right direction! I personally never recommend owners give the vaccines to their dogs themselves. They are often improperly stored and handled by non-veterinary professionals, rendering them useless. In addition, they are often administered incorrectly, and there have been many cases where dogs have come down with deadly disease due to this and the improper storing and handling. There are low cost vaccine clinics available thorough the country, and I can give you a link to find a low cost clinic in your area. In addition, I can give you other resources to help you afford the vaccines, including asking if your vet accepts payment plans or applying for Care Credit online. There is also an organization called Red Rover that give grants for treatment of sick animals, and you can see if you qualify for one of their grants. Rabies is always a possibility if there are sick dogs in your area, or other wildlife that carry it. There is a rabies vaccine available for people, however if you are caring for the animals, watching for signs of illness and bringing them into a vet for care right away is best as well as seeking care immediately if you are ever bitten. If you are able to capture the animals, getting them vaccinated can also help prevent the spread of illness from them to you and to other animals. You can also continue to feed any strays by setting out food without interacting or petting them, and then making sure to thoroughly clean any dishes used in between uses. Seeing if there is a local animal shelter or rescue in your area that you can volunteer for can also help you care for the animals in a safer, more structured manner.

If he is due the rabies shot regardless of other vaccination history you could go ahead and get it. You can ask the vet to leave some space on he vaccine card before recording the rabies so they can add the previous vaccines when the history arrives.
