Can I get rabies from feeding unvaccinated stray dogs and animals?

I would err on the side of caution. As Rabies is quite prominent in India and you do not know what the Rabies vaccine status of the dog that bit this dog or the dog that was bitten is, I would avoid trying to catch the dog. If you have a animal care and control in India, I would contact them and let them know that there is an injured dog where you live or see if there is a rescue that can help. You'll want to be sure to keep your pet up to date on heart worm prevention and that Pikica is fully protected against intestinal parasites. A dog must come into contact with saliva or nervous tissue (brain, spinal cord, etc) of an infected animal in order for the risk of rabies transmission to be present. Once the saliva or tissue have dried, the risk is quite minimal. Sniffing a carcass will not pose a risk. Blood, urine, feces, or muscle tissue are not infectious. As long as James remains current with vaccination, he should be fine. It is always recommended to keep him away from roadkill or dead animals anyway.

Hi, I think it is dangerous to let Teddy close to other rabid animals and also allow him to eat trash. He could get intoxicated by eating mouldy food for example, or get an obstruction by ingesting material that can't be digested. With regards to rabies, there is need for direct contact through a bite or infected saliva to go onto an open wound.. I would not allow him in the backyard until fully vaccinated and up to date with anti parasites treatment, and I would also start training Teddy. Hope this helps !

The only way to know if a dog was infected with rabies is to monitor for signs of rabies. The test for rabies uses brain tissue so it can't be done on an alive animal. There is a 15 day window of time from when an animal can transmit rabies until the animal would be showing clinical signs of rabies and then death. If there is no history of a bite wound on the pet dog than the likelihood of rabies is very low. If you ever see any signs of rabies than have him/her examined by a veterinarian. There are other diseases that can be transmitted to humans, like Ringworm, Salmonellosis, Leptospirosis, Campylobacter infection, Giardia infection, Cryptosporidium infection, Roundworms, Hookworms, etc. If your dog was examined by a vet and appears healthy, vaccinated, as well as treated for common intestinal parasites than it is not likely you will get an infection from him/her, especially if you have a normal immune system. Use a monthly heartworm pill that also contains a dewormer, like Heartgard or Interceptor to decrease the chance of your dog getting intestinal parasites in the future.
