Are Adaptil collars safe for dogs? What are their common side effects?

Calming pheromone collars (Adaptil is one example) can be quite beneficial for some dogs and may not cause any changes in behavior/anxiety/stress in other dogs. The hard part with these products is that their efficacy for your individual dog is only established through trial and error. They are certainly not harmful, provided that you follow all directions on the packaging. Plug in pheromone diffusers are also available if you feel more comfortable using these products rather than a collar and can have a similar effect.

So Flumethrin is used to kill ticks, and Imidacloprid is used to kill sucking insects such as fleas. This collar is safe to use on Oscar, but like any treatment, there are potential side effects. These include slight hair loss and irritation at the site of the collar. Seresto have been vigorously tested for safety, so you can use it on him without worry. I hope this helps!

Anti-anxiety medication, depending on which one, can be hard on the liver, depending on the medication, dose and frequency it is being used. Most anti-anxiety medications will depress the brain so tend to not cause seizures, but they do affect the brain so some animals can respond with seizures, but this is unlikely. Most of these medications will cause sedation, and the equivalent to 'drowsiness' that a human might feel. If you are seeing seizures or lethargy/weakness with the medications I recommend having your dog seen by a vet and checking blood levels. Also, I notice you have your dog listed as unneutered. If your dog is having anxiety, getting him neutered can help reduce stress and anxiety and would be recommended as part of an anti-anxiety treatment plan. Discuss this with your vet. A pheromone collar, such as the Adaptil collar, may help decrease anxiety. Gradual desensitization is also strongly recommended. Calming chews, such as Composure chews (by VetriScience) may help but they are not "magic pills". You will need to modify her behavior. This may require the assistance of a certified trainer.

Hello and thank you for contacting Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach. You should not apply Seresto collar on a wet dog, so as long as they are dry now it is ok to put the collar on. Please, note that it takes about 24hrs for the collar to fully work. Side effects to Seresto collar are uncommon, but please monitor your dogs for signs like excessive skin itching, local hair loss on the neck, red, inflamed skin around the neck.

It could be that Tiberius (love his name!) is suffering from an allergic skin reaction to the pheromone collar, and these lumps are hives. Given how fast they came up, I would take him into a vet now. The vet can prescribe him an antihistamine or steroids to stop the reaction.

Unfortunately I can't find any information on whether or not Adaptil is harmful either. My feeling is that there is probably minimal concern, but it is hard to know how caustic or irritating the carrier agent for the Adaptil might be. I think your best bet would be to consult a toxicologist at animal poison control (link below).
