Should I change my active adult dog's feeding routine: 2 or 3 times?

Pet's info: Dog | Boston Terrier | Male | neutered | 1 year and 2 months old

I am currently feeding my dog three times a day the same way as I did when he was a puppy. He is a very active and young boston terrier. I have heard that some suggest that it is better to feed a dog two times a day instead of three. I am always home during the lunch time and have not found it difficult to feed my dog at lunch time. Should I try to switch my dog's feedinf routine? Which one is better?

Hi there! As long as you are feeding the appropriate amount of calories then 2 or 3 feedings doesn't really make that much of a difference. Most people feed twice a day for convenience reasons. If it is easy for you to feed three times a day then I think that is fine.

    There is no right or wrong way to feed a dog if they are doing well and healthy! I don't have a preference on once, twice, or three times daily feeding, just as long as the total daily amount of food put out is appropriate for the dog and the type of food they are eating. If Archie eats well three times a day, this is a perfectly fine way to keep going!

While young small breed dogs can develop toy breed hypoglycemia, it would be rare for an adult dog to have this problem and require frequent meals. I think twice a day is probably just fine for both dogs as long as they don’t have any other medical problems.

Why do vets suggest 3 meals for young puppies, but 2 seems fine?
Many vets recommend to feed puppies more frequently to avoid issues with low blood sugar. Some puppies are not able to regulate their blood sugar very well until they are four months old. After four months old almost all dogs can regulate their blood sugar and so feeding twice a day is fine. Many dogs eat twice a day even as puppies and do fine. It’s all individual. Once daily or twice daily feeding is fine, whichever makes them happy and works into your schedule. There are a few medical disorders that may require changes to the feeding schedule but if they are healthy it is unnecessary to change it up now! The only thing I would avoid is free-feeding, where they have constant access to a food bowl, as dogs (Beagles in particular!) can often over-eat and become obese quite easily.
