Should I change my 8-week Shih Tzu puppy's feeding routine safely?

Congrats on your new puppy. I would first reference your puppy food, since every food has a different kcal/kibble ratio that will change how much you should feed her. However, on average you will feed a puppy 3 times a day and for a small breed dog it will be around 1/8-1/4 cup each feeding. Many vets recommend to feed puppies more frequently to avoid issues with low blood sugar. Some puppies are not able to regulate their blood sugar very well until they are four months old. After four months old almost all dogs can regulate their blood sugar and so feeding twice a day is fine. Many dogs eat twice a day even as puppies and do fine. It’s all individual. As a young Shih Tzu puppy, I'm assuming that Luna is under 3 pounds. Based upon that estimated body weight and her age, the chart recommends feeding 1/4-3/4 cups per day, divided into smaller meals. Small breed puppies really need to eat 3-4 times per day, if possible, because they can easily develop hypoglycemia (low blood sugar) if they do not eat frequently, which can lead to extreme weakness and seizures in severe cases. Try to feed Luna in the morning, when you get home from work, and again at bedtime, giving her about 1/8 cup per meal. If possible, try to look for a dog walker, pet sitter, or neighbor to feed her and let her outside midday. I hope that all goes well!

Hi, thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! I recommend feeding twice daily for the rest of their lives. Soska is a German Shepherd and they are at risk for bloat (gastric-dilitation-volvulous). So feeding her once daily may be a bit more risky for her. I hope this helps!

Hi there! As long as you are feeding the appropriate amount of calories then 2 or 3 feedings doesn't really make that much of a difference. Most people feed twice a day for convenience reasons. If it is easy for you to feed three times a day then I think that is fine.

If Jasper is otherwise acting normal and isn't lethargic or having vomit or diarrhea he may not need as much food or he may not like his food. I tell clients that they can stop feeding 3 times a day at 4 months of age. I would try feeding twice a day and feed 25% less volume that you were 3 times a day. You can try adding water to the dry food to make it more appealing. Or try a new brand of puppy food and gradually switch over. If he is acting sick then repost with symptoms or see a Vet.
