Is twice-daily feeding sufficient for my small dog's calories?

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed Small (up to 22lb) | Female | 3 years and 3 months old | 12 lbs

Heidi and Ginger love the low salt chicken broth over their Diamond Naturals dog food. It doesn't take much to soften their food. I understand Chihuahuas need to have food down more often than large dogs. Will twice a day for both dogs not to exceed the number of suggested calories for Ginger be sufficient? I've split Ginger's calories between the two meals. Ginger won't eat vegetables unless they are minced into her food. Heidi steals my carrots, broccoli and many more. Thank you,

While young small breed dogs can develop toy breed hypoglycemia, it would be rare for an adult dog to have this problem and require frequent meals. I think twice a day is probably just fine for both dogs as long as they don’t have any other medical problems.

A toy-breed puppy this age should be eating every 3-4 hours, since they are prone to hypoglycemia (low blood sugar) if they go much longer than that between meals. As Flynn gets older, you can gradually work towards feeding him less often until you are only feeding twice a day as an adult. As far as the amount goes, this will vary with every brand depending on its calorie content. If you look at the back of the food bag, it should have guidelines for how much to feed per day based on your puppy's age and weight :)

Good question. Because Cherie is now an adult dog he only needs to be fed twice a day, once in the morning and once at night for a total of around 3/4-1 cup daily. You are doing a good job with her feeding. As dogs become adults they often will only eat twice a day, and less sometimes than when they were growing. As long as she’s a normal weight I would feed her twice a day and an additional bedtime snack so she doesn’t have an empty stomach overnight, I feed Hills food and I like it because it has everything a dog needs. Is feeding my 5-6 month old corgi puppies only once a day sufficient?

I recommend to feed all dogs twice a day. It helps to keep the metabolism running and can decrease risk for stomach torsion and bloat. Adult dogs can be fed once a day but most prefer two smaller feedings. Puppies should eat twice a day because they are still developing and have faster metabolism than adults. Is vet-recommended dry food enough for my picky Chihuahua mix?

Yes! If you are buying a good dry dog food from your vet then this is all the nutrition she needs. Some dogs are grazers and prefer to nibble during the day and some dogs will eat three times a day if offered. So I am not worried about her eating only in the afternoon. This may just be her preference and her personality. As long as she eats everyday then that's good! I hope this helps!
