When is it safe for my 6-week puppy to go outside & get flea meds?

This is a great question! Your vet can help you by prescribing flea prevention medication that is suitable for puppies 8 weeks or older. That way you can work on potty training while helping to prevent the risk of parasites. If you choose to purchase over the counter flea medication please make sure you check to see if it is suitable for puppies as young as 8 weeks old, as some over the counter flea prevention options are not suitable for puppies that young.

Congratulations on your new puppy - Tucker is adorable! Puppies can go outside once they have all of their vaccines. These include rabies, distemper, parvovirus, along with several other viruses that commonly affect dogs. Depending on your area, you may want to consider having Tucker vaccinated for leptospirosis (a bacteria transmitted in the urine of wild rodents) or Lyme disease (a disease transmitted by ticks). These vaccines are typically given started at about 6 weeks of age, and are then given every 2-4 weeks until the entire vaccine requirement is completed. Most puppies start going outside once they are about 3-4 months old. Tucker should also be on a monthly flea, tick, and heartworm preventative before he starts going outside. Typically vaccinations are started at 6 weeks old. Pups can be dewormed with some medications starting at 2-3 weeks of age. If you plan to take them to your vet for vaccinations, I would call and ask what deworming protocol they recommend. Most flea medications are labeled for pups starting at 6-8 weeks or later if they are too small. The best thing for fleas is to treat Mom with frontline or advantage and manually remove fleas with a flea comb for now. Also keeping environment clean of fleas will help. Hope this helps.

Sage is protected enough that she can start going outside to pee. I would wait to have her mix with other dogs until two weeks after her last set of vaccinations so she'll be fully protected. Yes you should start her right away on heartworm and flea/tick medication. Ask what they recommend for your area when you get her last vaccinations as there are many good products. Cocoa is not old enough for her first vaccines until she is at least six weeks of age. She should not be showered until she is at least three months of age unless she is very dirty. You can use Frontline Spray on her for the fleas, it's safe to use on dogs as young as two days of age.

Hi, thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! You can take her outside. There is a fine line between socializing and preventing her from contracting a contagious disease. Walks outside are fine. No dog parks, no playing with dogs that are not vaccinated, etc. She is old enough for Nexgard, Revolution and Frontline for fleas and ticks. I hope this helps!

Most flea and tick medications should not be used until 6-8 weeks of age and will say the age on the package. If you are having a flea problem I recommend using a flea comb to comb out any fleas. I dip it into a bowl of water with a drop or two of Dawn dishwashing soap. This will kill the fleas. As far as ticks go again I would just check Princess over daily and remove any you see with tweezers. When you go in for her first vaccinations at six weeks your veterinarian can help you decide on a flea and tick product that works well in your area and is safe for small dogs such as Princess.
