Can 6-month-old puppies eat once daily? Do they need supplements?

Pet's info: Dog | Bichon Frise | Male | neutered | 6 months and 15 days old | 29.2 lbs

Hello! We would like to go from twice daily feedings for George & Louise to one meal per day. Are there any supplements that we should give them since they are only 6 months old?? Please advise. We feed them dry Pedigree Puppy Growth & Protection. They also get treats and snacks 2-3 times per day. Thank you in advance!

I would recommend not switching to once daily feedings until George and Louise are at least 1 year old. Smaller breed dogs are at a higher risk of hypoglycemia, as are puppies. Also, smaller breed dogs tend to get 'bilious vomiting', meaning that they are more likely to vomit when their stomach has been empty for a while.

The diet you are feeding is good, so no supplements are required, but I would recommend doing 2x feedings until 1 year old, and then every few months transfer 10% of the evening feed to the morning, and always give a small snack before bedtime to try to prevent bilious vomiting.

I recommend to feed all dogs twice a day. It helps to keep the metabolism running and can decrease risk for stomach torsion and bloat. Adult dogs can be fed once a day but most prefer two smaller feedings. Puppies should eat twice a day because they are still developing and have faster metabolism than adults. Why do vets suggest 3 meals for young puppies, but 2 seems fine?

Many vets recommend to feed puppies more frequently to avoid issues with low blood sugar. Some puppies are not able to regulate their blood sugar very well until they are four months old. After four months old almost all dogs can regulate their blood sugar and so feeding twice a day is fine. Many dogs eat twice a day even as puppies and do fine. It’s all individual. Can my puppy go 12 hours between meals or only eat twice daily?

At his age it is not ideal because their blood sugar can get too low in the middle of the day. If it's unavoidable however, it is ok. Because of his high rate of growth, a quality diet labeled for puppies- especially large breed puppy- is the best thing for him. Congrats on your new little one and kisses to Max!

My 3-month puppy won't eat 3 times a day. Can I feed him twice?

I would recommend feeding3-4 times a day at this age, if his appetite is poor then he will not be able to consume enough nutrition in two large meals. I do not recommend home preparing diets, especially in large and giant breed puppies with a risk of joint and bone disorders developing as they mature due to nutrient deficiencies and or excesses. It is practically impossible to mix some added protein and supplements to a high quality pupy food and expect the diet to become balanced. My puppy is eating less. Should I feed him twice a day now?

Hi, thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! If Jasper is otherwise acting normal and isn't lethargic or having vomit or diarrhea he may not need as much food or he may not like his food. I tell clients that they can stop feeding 3 times a day at 4 months of age. I would try feeding twice a day and feed 25% less volume that you were 3 times a day. You can try adding water to the dry food to make it more appealing. Or try a new brand of puppy food and gradually switch over. If he is acting sick then repost with symptoms or see a Vet. What's the best food for my puppy and how often should I feed him?

Great question! At almost two months of age, Ooge is old enough to be fed a puppy formulated food. It has to be a puppy formulated food because puppies require higher amounts of protein, calcium, and calories than an adult dog. A puppy food will provide everything he needs to grow properly. Brands I recommend include Royal Canin, Hill's Science diet, Purina ProPlan, and Iams. On the bag, there is a daily recommended amount of food, and I would divide that into three equal portions to feed him three times a day, once in the morning, noon, and evening. Once he turns six months old, he can be fed twice a day, once in the morning and once in the evening. I hope this helps :-)
